Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Fully collated and complete against the plate index on page 336. The First Official Geological Map of Ireland: It was originally created for a provisional edition of the memoir presented at the 1835 Dublin meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science. This makes it the very first official, government-sanctioned geological map published for any part of Ireland. This exceptionally complete 1837 first edition of the Ordnance Survey of the County of Londonderry (Volume the First) remains preserved in its original publisher's brown cloth binding, featuring prominent blind-stamped decorative borders and gold-gilded spine lettering reading "City and N.Western Liberties." Intact and uniform, the text block contains the foundational, hand-colored "Geological Map of the Parish of Templemore" by J.E. Portlock alongside the highly detailed, uncolored folding 1835 City Plan of Londonderry facing the opening pages of the "Artificial State" section. The volume's extensive historical and structural documentation is further illustrated by text-embedded woodcuts of historic stone gateways, detailed layout engravings of the Forts of Donalong and Coolmore, and multiple architectural plates depicting the city's Corporation Hall and Town-House. Capturing the region's physical landscape and antiquities, the scenic full-page engraving "Londonderry from the S.W. Bastion" is accompanied by precise archaeological cross-sections of The Grianan of Aileach. The book concludes with the vital "List of Plates" index and a fully intact natural history appendix, showcasing well-preserved scientific engravings of local fossils and regional flora, including a rare, beautifully hand-colored botanical plate of Calamagrostis lapponica. Volume I, is the 1st and last as it was not continued. The ambitious project aimed to create a detailed historical and statistical memoir for every single parish in Ireland to complement the 6-inch Ordnance Survey maps. However, the immense cost, labor, and time required to compile this level of detail for just one parish (Templemore) forced the British government to officially cancel and discontinue the entire memoir scheme shortly after its release. Main 336 pages, multiple prints and Illustrations. Full list of plates are present. 16 pages of notices, 7 extra prints at end, fossils and ferns. 28x22x3 cm's. 1446 grams. Yellow end papers have a black smoky design to them. George McCoy: A prominent Dublin-based master engraver, George Victor Du Noyer, Captain Joseph Ellison Portlock, (illustrator).
