Some Canadian reviewers were often less enthusiastic, however, with one calling Slick's comical American slang 'low, mean, miserable, and witless.' Almost two centuries later The Clockmaker is still central to Canadian literary history--and still highly controversial, particularly for its treatment of women and black Canadians.…

First and second series in one volume, third series in a separate volume; 12mo, pp. [5], 14-114; [5], 120-240; iv, [1], 14-215, [1]; both volumes in original cloth-backed boards, printed paper labels on spines, the first with brown cloth over pink boards, the second with blue cloth over blue boards; the second volume a bit skewed, both volumes slightly rubbed, but generally very good and sound. The first edition of the first series was first published in Canada in 1836; the second and third series were first published in London by Richard Bentley in 1838 and 1840 respectively. These American editions are surprisingly uncommon. The first American edition of the first series was published in 1837, and the second and third series the followed in 1838 and 1840. "These very clever sketches of Yankee and colonial life are, of course, somewhat overdrawn. They were immensely and deservedly popular, for under the guise of satire there was a rich vein of sound, practical common sense" (Sabin). Haliburton (1796-1865) was a Nova Scotian politician, judge, and most famously today, an author. He was one of the first Canadians to make a name for himself internationally as a writer of fiction and satire. Sabin 29684. …

2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. 4 p.l., [iii]-viii, 340, viii; 2 p.l., 453, iii. with half-titles. 6 engraved maps & plans (2 folding) & 4 engraved plates. 3 folding tables. modern bds. (some browning & foxing throughout, plates offset, several tears & repairs to folding maps no loss, marginal defect to 33 in Vol. I). First Edition, Second Issue Variant of Volume I; First Issue of Volume II? A revised and greatly expanded version of Haliburton's A General Description of Nova Scotia (1823). The first volume comprises what is generally considered to be the first modern history of Nova Scotia (1497-1828), while the second contains geographical and statistical information, descriptions of the counties, details respecting population, Indian tribes, political and judicial systems, education, agriculture, trade, and natural history. Haliburton's romanticized portrayal of the Acadians and their expulsion in this work inspired Longfellow's poem Evangeline. The maps and plates, some, if not all, drawn and/or engraved by Charles W.Torbett include a map of the province, plans of Louisbourg (two), the Shubenacadie Canal Line, the proposed Bay Verte and St. Peter's Canals, and views of Halifax from Dartmouth Cove, Province House in Halifax, Front Street in Windsor, and the Port and Part of The Town of Annapolis. A mixed issue set. Volume I is a variant of the second issue, with a further Extract (from the North American Review, dated Jan. 1830) added in the prelims (see Morley). Volume II has all of the points of the first issue, except for the presence of a half-title, said to be added in the second issue; it may be a later insertion. Chittick 655.2.2. Logan 155.2.
