Thomas Blizard Curling (1811-1888) fut chirurgien et professeur de chirurgie à Londres. Léon Gosselin (1815-1887), professeur de clinique chirurgicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris, membre de l'Académie de médecine et de l'Institut, assura la traduction de cet ouvrage, avec de nombreuses notes et additions originales et novatrices. Les travaux de Gosselin, plus spécialement ceux qui concernent les troubles fonctionnels, laissent entrevoir son grand intérêt d'essayer de dissocier l'atteinte de la fertilité de l'atteinte de la virilité. Le grand apport de Gosselin et le fait qu'il procède à une analyse approfondie du mécanisme de ces deux atteintes qui coexistent à certains cas, en donnant une explication très originale pour son temps. Il est parmi les premiers à entrevoir les deux fonctions distinctes du testicule : la fonction endocrine (virilité et sexualité par la production d'androgènes) et la fonction exocrine (fertilité par la production des spermatozoïdes). Il comprend aussi deux phénomènes : d'une part, ce qu'il appelle "l'influence de système nerveux" (dans le cadre des troubles de la virilité) qui pourrait correspondre à l'imprégnation androgénique du cerveau chez l'homme ; d'autre part, dans le cas de l'atteinte de la fertilité, il décrit l'absence de spermatozoïdes dans le sperme comme pouvant avoir deux grandes étiologies : les obstructions bilatérales des voies excrétrices (ce que l'on dénomme aujourd'hui azoospermie excrétoire) et l'absence de production de spermatozoïdes par les testicules (ce que l'on dénomme aujourd'hui azoospermie sécrétoire).".
