The smell of fusel oil, the aroma of tobacco leaves, and the sight of cement dusted houses were for many years the epitome of the enterprising city by the Limfjord. From the mid-1800s on there was a proliferation of industry in the old medieval city, and by the 1890s tall factory smokestacks and their pillars of smoke dominated the city's silhouette. Now a century later the city is once again undergoing great change. The heavy industry is being shut down or moved outside the city. Factories are being demolished and replaced by offices and housing. Amidst the delight in ridding the city of industry, where it has polluted and made noise, the unique architectonic value also housed in factory buildings has been overlooked. It is high time to question what ought to be salvaged from demolition for the sake of preservation and new use. Drawing inspiration from abroad, one can seek new ways of utilizing industrial areas, and therewith preserve some of the city's profile and identity. Seven industrial plants have been selected for the exhibition, representative of different periods ottime and building types: Zincks Fabrikker, Carl Christensen A/S, De Danske Spritfabrikker A/S, C.W. Obels Tobaksfabrikker A/S, Dansk Eternit A/S, Aalborg Portland A/S and Nordkraft (ELSAM-Aalborgvaerket A/S). The factories are portrayed through historic and topical photographs, architectural models, machines, raw materials and final end products. In this book, the impressive building and structural setting of the Nordjyllands Art Museum becomes fully appreciated. Designed by Elissa and Alvar Aalto and Jean-Jacques Baru?l, the buildings housing the collections enable visitors to experience the unique and always changing combination of space, lighting and weather. The works of art have optimal conditions in these light, sublime and flexible rooms. Though the succession of enthralling photographs by internationally acclaimed H?l?ne Binet form the nucleus of the book, it also includes essays on the history of the museum, the interplay of light within building, as well as a presentation of initial sketches for the building., Danish/ English, Year1999, Illust. This book concentrates on Le CorbusierÆs lesser known works of art (painting and sculpture), which he himself considered a key to his famous works of architecture. Several internationally acknowledged critics examine different parts of Le CorbusierÆs works of art, beginning with his early Purist paintings, developed in cooperation with the French painter Ozenfant, and continuing with his later, more colorful and freely modeled paintings from after the war., Danish/ English, Year1995, Illust.
