Edited by Thomas Bebington from the original papers and published posthumously, the volume comprises Arlington"s correspondence with Sir William Temple from July 1665 to September 1670. Henry Bennet, first Earl of Arlington (1618-1685), was an English statesman and one of the principal ministers of Charles II. He served as Secretary of State from 1662 until 1674. An important collection of Restoration diplomatic correspondence, documenting the opening years of Temple"s employment abroad and the conduct of English foreign policy under Charles II. In a contemporary full calf binding, sympathetically rebacked with the original spine laid down.Externally, sound. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to calf with the odd crease. Sympathetic repair to calf at edge of front board. Rubbing to boards resulting in the odd chip. Small area of worming to lower corner of rear board. Contemporary ownership inscription to verso of front free endpaper, dated 1721. Small contemporary shelf annotation to first blank. Lifting to rear paste down. Hinges slightly strained, but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound.
