William Beach Thomas attended Shrewsbury School from 1882. As a keen sportsman he was soon appointed huntsman to the Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt. Later, after several teaching jobs which he rather disliked, he became employed by the Daily Mail as a writer of countryside material. During World War I Thomas was sent by the newspaper to France as a War correspondent and it is this for which he became best known. Following the War he got back to writing about the English countryside, authoring and contributed to a great many books on the subject.
