Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good-. Illustrated by (cover illustration) Baskerville (illustrator). First Edition. (red cloth with pictorial paste-on label on front cover, title/author label on spine; no dust jacket) [good sound copy with just minor bumping and light wear to the extremities, some smudging on the front-cover pictorial label, and with a somewhat unsightly brown stain on the fore-edge affecting the first one-third of the book (page edges only; no staining on the interior) and a couple of diagonally-creased upper page corners; vintage bookseller's label (Hollywood Book Store, "Opposite Hollywood Hotel") on rear pastedown]. Classic comic novel of the 1920s, set in Paris but somewhat unusual in that it focuses not on the au courant world of the Left Bank but rather on the remnants of Edwardian Era society on the Right Bank. The author's only novel, it was a critical and commercial success, but wasn't enough to save him from an early death from alcoholism in 1932. Adapted as a 1928 silent film (apparently no longer extant) by the Fox Film Corporation, starring Mary Astor, Matt Moore and Sally Eilers.

Appointed surveyor in 1663, he also published three news sheets: the Intelligencer and the News (both 1663-66) and the Observator (1681-87), as well as numerous pamphlets in support of the government. He was knighted in 1685 after helping to discredit the Popish Plot, a fictitious story alleging that the Jesuits were planning to assassinate King Charles II.Baskerville was the fourth son of the antiquary Hannibal Baskerville. He was born at Bayworth House, Sunningwell, near Abingdon, in 1630, since, according to the "Visitation of Berkshire", his age on 16 March 1664 was thirty-four.He wrote an account of a journey which he made through several English counties in England in 1677 and 1678; and a part of his manuscript relating to Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, and Gloucestershire is still preserved in the Harleian Collection. This journal, though referred to by several of his contemporaries, mainly consists of short notes of the towns and places visited by the writer, interspersed with epitaphs copied in churchyards, and some doggerel verse.
