From the preface The present volume gives a modest overview of the significant developments in plant pathology during the last one hundred years in our country. Renowned experts have made contributions in their respective fields. The first chapter (Prologue) highlights the status of plant pathology in India before 1905 and sets the stage for an overview of the developments made thereafter. Chapters on significant achievements and current status of knowledge has been contributed by leading experts on mycology bacteriology virology and nematology and also on epidemiological research fungicide research biological control host plant resistance against pathogens and on the application of biotechnological approaches for management of plant diseases. This covered the major areas of research in plant pathology. Besides non conventional chapters encompassing the areas of international co operation policy issues and uncommon opportunities are also included along with the role of professional societies in plant pathology in India. The editors are aware of the fact that the volume by no way is a complete account of the vast ocean of information available on various aspects of the subject. However it is anticipated that the diverse areas covered in this volume would serve as a roadmap for the younger generation of plant pathologists and policy makers alike who have greater challenges ahead to resolve the problems for augmenting production ensuring biosecurity and facilitating trade under the changing global trade regime. 453 pp.
Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Contents Preface. 1. Historical background and physiological terms. 2. Botanical description. 3. Morphological features of crop. 4. Physiology of crop maturity defoliation and harvest aids. 5. Monitoring system for the management of cotton growth and fruiting. 6. Water relations in cotton. 7. Environmental stress and cotton growth. 8. Nutrition. 9. Photosynthesis. 10. Respiration. 11. Plant growth regulators for cotton production. 12. Metabolism of fiber development. 13. Improvement in cotton fiber through biotechniques. 14. Fiber quality of transgenic cotton. Index. This book will emphasize the physiological and biochemical functions of the plants. Despite its inherent potential growth habit cotton is managed as an annual crop plant. Continued vegetative growth after flowering diverts the plant's energy away from lint and seed production so the perennial nature of even modern cultivars opposes current production system. It is important to recognize that physiological function depend on structures whether the process is gas exchange (respiration) in the leaf water conduction in xylem or photosynthesis in the chloroplasts. Moreover cotton plant produces fruits on two different types of branches each unique in growth habit which complicates crop management. Thus understanding various physiological processes of the cotton plant helps to grow a high yielding high quality crop. A total of 14 chapters dealing with important physiological aspects necessary for efficient cotton production systems are compiled in this book. A list of various physiological terms is given along with morphological features of the crop. The physiological mechanisms related to development and crop maturity are described. The processes of photosynthesis respiration and water relations are explained along with recent research findings. Role of macronutrients and micronutrients their requirement for various processes and deficiency symptoms have been included. The abiotic factors viz. temperature water CO2 and light affecting yield have been discussed. The book also includes chapters on physiology of cotton fiber development and its biochemical components. In recent years several biotechnique have been used for producing hi tech cotton. A concise information of various techniques used to improve quantity as well as quality of fiber and their use for production of disease and herbicide resistant cotton genotypes has been compiled. 316 pp.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. The book entitled "Disease Problems in Vegetable Production" 2nd edition, is specifically prepared for under and post graduate students in Agriculture/ Horticulture and range of professionals including teachers, researchers, extension plant pathologists and elite vegetable growers. The book gives a comprehensive over-view of economic importance, symptomatology, etiology, pre-disposing factors and management of vegetable diseases employing cultural, biological, host resistance, plant extracts and chemical methods as such and in anintegrated approach so that the ravages due to the diseases remain below economic threshold level. A total of 19 chapters dealing with important diseases of vegetables like potato, tomato, crucifers, cucurbits, pea, French bean, chillies and bell pepper, onion, garlic, eggplant, carrot, sugar beet, colocasia, okra and leafy vegetables have been compiled in this book. Two new chapters on diseases of ginger and diseases of vegetables under protected cultivation as well as some important diseases of different vegetable crops left out in the first edition have been added in this edition. Besides, the book also includes chapters on common pathogens of vegetable crops, disease problems in nurseries, post harvest diseases and diseases caused by nematodes. All chapters have been updated in the light of available literature up to 2017. Symptoms, disease cycles of important diseases and different structures of pathogen(s) have also been given in the book that will not only help in better diagnosis and understanding of the perpetuation and spread of the causal pathogens but will also help in the management of these diseases more effectively. Coloured photographs of disease symptoms have also been included for easy identification of vegetable diseases. (jacket).
