It is an…attempt to reestablish the text of the Magdalen papyrus of Matthew (p.64), to argue for its having been written in the first century, and to assess the implications of that dating for the origins of the Synoptic Gospels. All these investigations and deductions seem proper academic exercises, however unlikely the conclusions may be. But the whole debate has been hijacked by an inappropriate journalistic approach. (?) The sub-title of this book is: ?The most sensational evidence on the origins of the Gospels since the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.? This is a two-edged sword and is inadvertently critical. Whatever else the Scrolls may reveal, it is universally recognized that they tell us absolutely nothing about the origins of the NT Gospels!? (J.K. De Romeinse stadhouder Pilatus liet boven het kruis waar Jezus van Nazaret aan werd vastgenageld, een plankje aanbrengen waarop in drie talen de reden stond vermeld voor Jezus' veroordeling. In de kerk Sante Croce in Gerusalemme te Rome wordt een houten fragment bewaard dat een deel va…n dit kruisopschrift zou zijn. Tot nu toe is daar weinig aandacht aan besteed, maar de auteurs stellen dat het hier om een authentiek stuk gaat. Dit is een gewaagde stelling, maar schrikken niet terug voor het verkondigen van controversiele meningen. De tekst op het houten fragment vertoont merkwaardige trekjes; zo zijn de Griekse en Latijnse tekst van rechts naar links geschreven, evenals het bijna geheel verloren gegane Hebreeuwse (of Aramese) opschrift. De bespreking van de tekst is uitvoerig en redelijk technisch, waarbij het onhandig is dat zowel de Griekse als de Hebreeuwse letters vaak verkeerd zijn weergegeven (foutje bij de vertaling?). De tekst en de legendarische ontdekking ervan door keizerin Helena worden in een brede context geplaatst. Het is de vraag of de these van de auteurs in wetenschappelijke kring zal worden aanvaard.
