Our copy contains most of the very rare pieces which the author intended for the fifth part, which remained unfinished. The first part was published in 1663 (or with a new title, Paris, Séb. Mabre-Cramoisy, in 1666); The second and third were in 1666; The fourth is 1672 [.]. The author was preparing a fifth part when death surprised him, and he left only various detached parts, some of which were not entirely printed. In 1696, after having reprinted some of the pieces which had been exhausted, new titles were added to the remaining copies, and, after the fourth part, there were added the pieces intended for the fifth, as they were in the house" (Brunet). 5 parts in 2 volumes. Rare, complete copy of one of the most important and comprehensive travel writings of the 17th century. This richly illustrated work includes a collection of voyages to America, Asia, and Australia, including Japan, Africa, Russia, the East-Indies, and the Near East. It is the earliest French collection of…voyages of any importance, with highly interesting and important accounts on the geography, history, and languages of many parts of the world. One of the great driving forces behind the work was France's wish to increase colonial trade, and to compete with the other European nations, including Spain, The Netherlands, and England. The aim of the work was to gather the most up-to-date practical knowledge about navigation and foreign countries. It includes entries on Africa, the Far East, South East Asia, America, and Australia; together with several important maps. Descriptions relating to virtually every part of the world are represented in these two folio volumes and are drawn mainly from English (including Hakluyt and Purchas), Italian, French, Portuguese and Dutch printed and manuscript sources. They include John Greave's description of the Egyptian pyramids, the voyages of Anthony Jenkinson to Cathay, John Hawkins, Thomas Roe and Edward Terry to the Mogol court, William Methold to Golconda, William Schouten to Siam, Thomas Gages to Mexico, Abel Tasman to Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, Francois Caron's relation from Japan, descriptions of the flora and fauna of India and China, Martino Martini's description and history of China, a history of Ethiopia by Manoel d'Almeida, Jerónimo Lobo on the Empire of Abyssinia and the source of the Nile, and other selections on Tartary, the Philippines, Mongolia, Persia, Arabia, Russia, etc. The American interest lies in the fourth part, which contains the voyages de Sieur Acarete à Buenos Aires.dans la rivière de la Plate & de la par terre au Pérou, L'Indien, ou Portrait au Natuel des Indiens by Juan de Palafox, Histoire de l'Empire Mexicain and Relation du Mexique, avec l'Histoire de la nouvelle Espagne by Thomas Gages. The present work is the famous 1696 edition of the work, often considered the definitive edition. Because of this, contents and arrangement of individual copies vary, making this work bibliographically very complicated. Complete or nearly complete copies are hard to find, but the present copy is complete. With the book plates of Elize Gulston and Joseph Y Jeanes mounted on the front pastedown of both volumes, a manuscript shelf mark on the first flyleaf of volume 1 ("No. 1902") and volume 2 ("No. 1903"). The front hinge of both volumes has been professionally restored, the edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed, the boards are somewhat rubbed. The work is very slightly foxed and browned throughout, several maps and plates have small tears in the margins. Otherwise in good condition.l Camus, A., Mémoire sur la collection des grands et petits voyages, et sur la collection des voyages de Melchisedec Thevenot (Paris 1802), p. 293-341 (with extensive descriptions of the different parts); Church 672 (reissue of 4 parts only of 1681); John Carter Brown Libr., (1675-1700), pp. 335-341; Landwehr, VOC, 258 (parts 1-4 only, ed. 1663-1672); Leclerc, Bibl. Contemporary sprinkled calf, richly gold-tooled spines with two red morocco labels lettered in gold, gold-tooled board edges and turn-ins, red sprinkled edges, marbled endpapers. With the title pages and tables of contents printed in red and black, 11 engraved maps (10 folding, 1 double-page), 25 engraved plates (11 folding, 1 double-page and 13 full-page), 75 illustrations in the text (2 full-page), numerous decorated woodcut initials, ornaments, and headpieces.

First edition. DIBNER 84: ANCIENT GREEK TECHNOLOGY. First edition of this collection of early Greek writings on technology (especially military technology) and hydrostatics. It contains several treatises on the mechanics and siege operations, or poliorcetica, used in the Hellenistic period (the period between Alexander and Augus…tus), including the construction and management of their projectile engines. The first six works in the volume comprise the writings on the subject of military engines that were compiled by Athenaeus, Apollodorus, Biton, Heron and Philon. These works include the first edition, in both Greek and Latin, of Biton's Construction of War Machines and Artillery, of extant part of the Mechanike Syntaxis, attributed to Philon of Byzantium, and of the Poliorcetica of Apollodorus of Damascus. These are followed by the Greek and Latin texts of Hero of Alexandria's works on hydrostatics, the Pneumatica and Automata, which include what some regard as the first description of a steam-engine; this is the first printing of the Greek text of these works. Thévenot, the King's librarian to Louis XIV, prepared the present work from a rather defective secondary manuscript (Codex Parisinus 2435). After Thévenot's death in 1692, it was revised by the mathematician La Hire with insightful annotations by Boivin, an official in the King's library. It is one of three early publications of the French Academy of Sciences, grouped together as Dibner 84. "Printed at the royal press in small editions, they were intended as gifts for the King and Academy. In size, binding and beauty of the plates, they are among the most sumptuous books in science" (Dibner). This is a rare book on the market, only eight copies having appeared at auction in the last 40 years. The Evelyn copy was sold at Christie's in 1977. To gain access to the walls of a site under siege, a siege tower or ram was brought into position and used to launch an attack onto the walkway, aided by missile fire from the higher levels of the tower. Simultaneous attacks with scaling ladders took place. A siege tower is a specialized siege engine constructed to protect assailants and the ladders used when approaching the defensive walls of a fortification. The tower was usually rectangular, with four wheels and a height roughly equal to that of the wall; it was sometimes higher to allow archers to stand on the top and fire into the fortification. The tower was made chiefly of wood, but sometimes there were metal components as well. They were unwieldy to manoeuvre, and slow to assemble, and consequently were usually constructed at the siege site. Sometimes siege towers themselves incorporated other devices, including artillery, rams, and dropbridges. Two main types of artillery equipment were used in this period: bolt-throwers (ballistae: used for picking off prominent individuals), and stone-throwers (scorpiones, onagri). Stone throwers could cause structural damage, but were generally confined to firing at towers, gates or siege machinery. Artillery might use incendiary ammunition when firing at gates or equipment. In common with much Byzantine literature, poliorcetica draw heavily on earlier, classical material. Since these were composed before the development of heavy artillery, the poliorcetica are not so much concerned with large machines but rather with describing techniques for bringing men close to fortifications and then ways of undermining them. They also suggest various psychological tricks which might be used to outwit the enemy. Such ancient works on military machines were a source of fascination to the Italians of the late 15th and 16th centuries, not only because of their historic interest, but also as a source for modern inventions to be used in contemporary warfare, and several of these works were first published in Renaissance Italy. The present volume begins with the De Machinis of Athenaeus, a Cilician ex-statesman living in Rome in the 20s B.C., and a contemporary of the arch.

FIRST EDITION (later title page). 150 x 82 mm. (5 7/8 x 3 1/4"). 6 p.l., xii, 47 pp. Early 19th century marbled sheep, covers with cresting gilt roll border, smooth spine divided into compartments by thick and thin gilt rules, these either filled with a lattice of interlocking gilt circles or with gilt flower at center, red roan… label, marbled endpapers. With 35 engravings by Charles Moette showing proper swimming technique. âLower covers with minor loss of patina due to insect activity, extremities just a trifle rubbed, mild marginal foxing to first and last few text leaves, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, QUITE CLEAN, FRESH, AND BRIGHT internally, in a well-preserved binding. This is as fine a copy as one could hope to find of the charmingly illustrated first edition of the first French work on swimming. In the history of swimming publications, it was preceded only by the 1538 "Colymbetes" by the German professor of languages Nicolaus Winmann, the 1587 "De Arte Natandi" by the Englishman Everard Digby, and the 1595 English translation and adaptation of that work by Christopher Middleton. Thévenot mainly copied Digby's work, and for good reason. Whereas Digby was reputed to be a master swimmer, Thévenot was said to be entirely unable to swim. At the time, that put him in good company, as an ability to swim was not common among his contemporaries, and swimming was generally viewed as a skill cultivated only by working-class sailors. Thévenot pointed out its usefulness to trade and to the military, at a time when ships were essential in both of those spheres. He also observes that everyone--whether a world traveller or a cautious soul who never leaves his hometown--runs the risk of falling into a river or pond, in which case a knowledge of swimming could mean the difference between life and death. There are 39 chapters, each devoted to a different stroke or technique, and 35 plates in which the move illustrated is discussed. Almost all of the swimmers depicted are male, but a couple of plates show women, and one a cherubic child. According to Scott Cleary's article "The Ethos Aquatic: Benjamin Franklin and the Art of Swimming" in "Early American Literature" Vol. 46, No. 1 (2011), the teenaged Franklin used this work to learn to swim, an activity he enjoyed throughout his life. In our copy, the title page imprint of T. Moette has been replaced by a later one bearing the name of the widow Piget, quai des Augustins. OCLC locates a handful of diverse titles (among them an edition of Molière's works and books on gardening and natural history) issued by the widow between 1748 and 1750, but OCLC and KVK locate no other institutional copies of this work with Piget's imprint, and none appears in auction records. Our 1696 first printing is not a common book generally, and copies in the condition seen here are very rare.

First edition. DIBNER 84: ANCIENT GREEK TECHNOLOGY. First edition, the Stanhope copy, of this collection of early Greek writings on technology (especially military technology) and hydrostatics. It contains several treatises on the mechanics and siege operations, or poliorcetica, used in the Hellenistic period (the period between… Alexander and Augustus), including the construction and management of their projectile engines. Provenance: Philip Stanhope, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-86) (bookplate on front paste-down). Stanhope was a Fellow of the Royal Society from 1735, and had a lifelong interest in mathematics. A student of Abraham de Moivre, Stanhope made significant contributions to probability theory. He was also a patron of various mathematicians, notably Thomas Bayes; Stanhope was responsible for Bayes's election to the Royal Society, and probably also for Bayes taking up the study of probability (Bellhouse, pp. 190 & 201). They also suggest v.

First edition of a delightfully illustrated manual on swimming. It is one of the earliest works on the subject, being preceded, according to the author's preface, only by the works of the Englishman Everard Digby and the Dutchman Nicholas Wijnman. Melchisedech Thevenot (ca. 1620-1692), was a French traveller and learned book col…lector. He published collections of voyages, and wrote several curious treatises, including a Tartar grammar and this illustrated guide to swimming. It was translated into English in 1699, but the next French edition did not appear until 1769, when swimming became more widely popular; it remained the standard manual for the rest of the 18th century.A few occasional spots and the binding slightly rubbed. With old owner's comments in a neat hand in ink on first free endpaper and the plates numbered by hand in ink. Fine copy of the rare first edition.l Hofer, Baroque Book Illustration 56; Thomas, Swimming (1904), p. 180; WorldCat (9 copies). Contemporary calf, title on spine, red sprinkled edges. With 35 engraved plates of people swimming by Charles Moette. Pages: [12], XII, 47, [1 blank] pp.
