Der Autor reiht sich in die Gruppe der abenteuerlustigen und jagdeifrigen Männer ein, die um die Jahrhundertwende des 20sten Jahrhunderts das wilde und noch teils (von Weißen) unerforschte Alaska auf der Suche nach Abenteuer und Anerkennung bereisten. Theodore Rathbone Hubback (1872-1942), ein britischer Ingenieur und Autor, der viele Jahre seines Lebens als Bauingenieur und Plantagenbesitzer in Malaysien verbrachte, wandelte sich im Laufe seines Lebens vom Sportjäger zum Umweltschützer der frühen Stunde. Seine Reise nach Alaska scheint bei der Wandlung vom Saulus zum Paulus eine Rolle gespielt zu haben auch wenn die Fotos im Buch eine andere Sprache sprechen. Vielleicht wurde er auch von seinem Namensvetter, dem 26.amerikanische Präsident Roosevelt inspiriert, die Waffe an den Nagel zu hängen. Auch dieser verlieh in einigen Schriften trotz jagdlichen Eifers seiner Besorgnis über den Verlust von Arten und Lebensraum Ausdruck. Vehement setzte Hubback sich nach seiner Rückkehr in Malaysia für die Errichtung eines Schutzgebiets ein, dem King George V National Park, heute Taman Negara".
