Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) H. Lawrence Hoffman (illustrator). First Edition. [green cloth (see note), light wear at spine ends, otherwise a solid clean book; jacket slightly edgeworn, very shallow paper loss at spine ends, small triangular surface-scrape at upper right corner of front panel, light soiling to rear panel, about a one-inch split at bottom front hinge]. Dark and brooding novel of loneliness, romance and murder in a small Southern town; basis for the dark and brooding, and very romantic, Frank Borzage film (1948) of the same title. [NOTE: This novel was issued in both a red and green cloth binding, with the green being slightly thicker than the red (at least in examples I've seen). There are also two variant dust jackets: this one, designated "Variant B" (in Johnson, "The Dark Page"), features a man's head poking out of a cloudbank and partially blocking the moon, and is (again in my experience) less common than the "no-face" version.] NOISBN.

Unbound. Zustand: Fine. A small collection of ephemera pertaining to the 1959 National Book Awards. Fine. A collection of press releases, short biographies, fact sheets, and programs for the tenth National Book Awards held on March 3, 1959. The winners that year were Bernard Malamud in the fiction category for *The Magic Barrel*, J. Christopher Herold in non-fiction for his book, *Mistress to an Age: A Life of Madame de Staël*, and Theodore Roethke in poetry for *Words for the Wind*. The archive includes manuscript copies of the address given by Arthur H. Compton, copies of the winner's speeches, "replies from previous NBA winners," and an author photograph of Malamud. Roethke was unable to accept the award in person and it fell to poet Daniel Hoffman to accept on his behalf. Hoffman's acceptance speech is featured here where he writes, "were Theodore Roethke here to accept this honor tonight he might have said."these poems -and I say this detachedly and humbly-are not, in any final sense, mine at all" they are a piece of luck (good or bad, as you may choose to judge." Malamud remarks in his speech, "a small miracle has come to pass, and I am grateful to the judges, among other things for their courage. I hope the choice of a non best-selling short story collection sets a precedent for more of the same. The short story, as you know, is strong and accomplished in American fiction, and I hope that some of its expert practitioners.will be recognized by you in the future." A modest but interesting collection of material pertaining to the prestigious award.
