First edition. 8vo. 383, (1) pp. Illustrated, plates, portraits. Biography of an African American businessman in Arkansas, written by his son and a co-author who explain that when they discovered the local printing firm was too small to handle their book, they signed a printing contract with the National Baptist Publishing Board in Nashville, Tennessee, "in order to have the work done by Negroes." Born in slavery in Mississippi, Bond would eventually establish the largest business in Madison, Arkansas, in reality an amalgam of businesses, including dry goods, insurance, construction, agricultural services (e.g., a cotton gin), real estate, etc., designed to serve the needs of the large African American population in the area. Work, p. 473. Blockson catalogue 9453. Corner of one leaf torn away (not affecting text), else a very good copy. Original gilt-stamped cloth. (38982). (#6491).
