In den WarenkorbBroadside, 14 3/4 x 6 in., printed on buff paper. Some faint old staining and old fold lines, text in Ukrainian, in various sizes and styles of type. The broadside advertises the performance of Kropvynytsky's play, and includes a cast list. The performance was to begin at 9 pm, and before the show a brass band was to play, under… the leadership of Dr. Shvahheyma. Also advertised were two other events: on July 21, a performance of a mixed choir, and solo piano; and another performance to benefit the Teachers Union on July 28. The playwright Marko Kropvynytsky (1840-1910) was known as the author of many populist-realist plays, tinged with romanticism of the times. He was an actor, composer, stage director and founder of the first professional Ukrainian theater in Russian-ruled Ukraine. According to the Encyclopedia of Ukraine, several generations of populist-realist actors of the prerevolutionary period, including the stars of the Ukrainian stage, were trained by him. The publishing company which produced this broadside was founded in Zolotonosha, in central Ukraine in 1907. Following the Russian Revolution of February 1917, Ukraine began a campaign for more independence itself. A brief nationalist period saw the rise of several factions within Ukraine. We were unable to determine what the Zbillshennya Fund was, and whether it had any connection to this chaotic period in Ukrainian history.

Small hole in lower left quadrant, black ink blemish along center line, bright illustrations. Includes the following film productions: To Mary With Love featuring Warner Baxter and Myrna Low; The Country Doct…or featuring the Dionne Quintuplets and Jean Hersholt; San Francisco starring Clark Gable, Jeanette MacDonald and Spencer Tracy; Society Doctor featuring Robert Taylor and Chester Morris; and Rhythm On The Range with Bing Crosby and Bob Burns. The Fox Riverside Theater is now known as the Riverside Fox Performing Arts Center, a historic and cultural landmark in Riverside, California. The original Spanish Colonial Revival style building opened in 1929 as a vaudeville and cinema theater. It was designed by Los Angeles architect Clifford Balch and engineer Floyd E. Stanberry, who built 305 theaters across the West Coast of the United States. While under construction, the theater was sold to William Fox of Fox Studios, becoming the Fox Riverside Theater. The cinema was used as a Hollywood test site from 1929-1960, being the first movie theater to screen Gone with the Wind on September 9, 1939.
