Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Looking Back, or, Personal Reminiscences by the Widow of a New Zealand Pioneer Settler By Ellen Anne Hewett (Mrs. Duff Hewett). Published by Campfield Press, St. Albans, 1911. True First Edition. BAGNALL H762. Hardback, published in original hardback boards with a cloth spine (no dust jacket as issued by Campfield Press in 1911). An incredibly scarce and highly important primary source document of early colonial life in New Zealand. Ellen Hewett provides a gripping, first-hand account of setting sail for NZ in 1858, establishing a rugged bush farm at Kai Iwi (Whanganui district), and enduring the frontier conflicts of the New Zealand Wars—culminating in the tragic raid on her family property. While later New Zealand reprints are occasionally found, this is the coveted 1911 original first printing issued in England by the Campfield Press before the author returned to active evangelical and temperance work in NZ. Condition Binding firm Cover: Displays moderate to heavy foxing/age-spotting to the cloth surface and some mild rubbing, bumping, marks, fading and shelf-wear, which is very common for this specific edition's exterior finish. Pages show natural age-tanning, light foxing concentrated around the outer page edges. Inscription on the front end-paper. 4 b&w plates present and in good order. Overall: A very good, complete, and completely original copy of a foundational piece of Whanganui pioneer social history. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. All books are sent with free courier postage within New Zealand.…

First edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers by Dan Rico, 4to, 15 pages. Includes other illustrations by Rico as well as photos. 29 cm. In Yiddish. Title translates as "Youth." Single Holocaust-era issue of monthly communist Yiddish youth magazine Yungvarg. The magazine ran from 1937 until at least 1944. "As the Yiddish school systems blossomed in the 1920s, an accompanying literature developed in New York. The Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute published Kinder Zhurnal [Children's Journal] from 1921 to the late 1970s. The editor for the first 15 years was the leading Yiddish literary critic Shmuel Niger. The Workman Circle published Kinderland, and then Kinder Tsaytung [Children's Newspaper]. The communists [sic, Communist] schools published the monthly Yungvarg. Many of the leading Yiddish writers tried their hands at writing for children, and as a result, there are many masterpieces in these journals. The leading illustrators were Zuni Maud, Yosl Cutler, Aron Goodelman, Avreml, Saul Raskin, Note Koslovsky, Boris Aronson, Emanuel Romano, and Lola. They designed puzzles, games and comics, in addition to wonderful illustrations of stories." (Itsik Gottesman, University of Texas). Cover illustrator Dan Rico (1912-1985) "was an American paperback novelist, screenwriter, wood engraver and comic book writer-artist, who co-created the Marvel Comics characters the Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) with plotter Stan Lee and artist Don Heck; Jann of the Jungle with artist Arthur Peddy; Leopard Girl with artist Al Hartley; and Lorna the Jungle Girl with an artist generally considered to be Werner Roth. His pen names include Dan Rico, Donella St. Michaels, Donna Richards, Joseph Milton, and N. Korok" (Wikipedia). SUBJECT(S): Children's literature, Yiddish -- Periodicals. Children's literature, Yiddish. OCLC: 19068449. Shipping label (to Sholem Aleichem Institute!) on cover, normal wear from age but otherwise clean copy. Very Good Condition. (YID-48-79-GGCC-'xe).…

Zustand: Very good. May 13th, 1886., 1886. Very good. - Over 145 words penned on three sides of 7-3/4 inch wide 4-7/8 inch wide cream paper with an integral attached leaf, each page framed with a black ink mourning border. The widow of General Thomas Sword thanks Colonel Marston for his "kind letter, with loving and appreciative words from Gen. Crawford and yourself." "I cannot express our value [of] the touching remembrance, that have come to me - from those filling the higher, and lower walks of combined military & naval life with Gen. Swords, & particularly from those who stood by his side in the dark hour when exposed to almost individual perils and held up his hands." Signed "C. Augusta Swords". There are some light brown stains to the first two pages and the top corner of the second leaf is chipped. Paper remnants, likely from mounting, adhere to the top right corner of the last blank page. Very good. The letter is probably addressed to Gilman Marston who served as a Colonel and later as a Brigadier General in the Civil War. Gen. Crawford to whom she refers is probably General Samuel W. Crawford. A veteran of the Mexican War and the Civil War, General Thomas Swords (1806-1886) is the highest ranking veteran buried in the Piscatawaytown Burial Ground in Deison, NJ. Then Captain Swords marched with Colonel Stephen Kearney from Kansas to Santa Fe, New Mexico to capture the city during the Mexican War. He was chief quartermaster of the Department of the Cumberland, and the Ohio during the Civil War and served at the battle of Chickamauga. He and his wife Charlotta Augustus Swords lived in New York City at the time of his death.…

Zustand: Fine. Springfield, Illinois, March 14th, between [1929 and 1931]., [1929 and 1931]. Fine. - Over 45 words penned on their personal "Lindsay / 603 South Fifth Street / Springfield, Illinois" stationery. The poet's wife informs future congressman Seymour Halpern that her "husband is out of the city, and pressure & other work, will prevent him writing you the letter you request." She goes on to say she is sending him material "However, the enclosed material will help you, I know, with your essay." Signed "Elizabeth Lindsay". Folded for mailing, else fine. The wife and widow of the poet Vachel Lindsay, Elizabeth Conner Lindsay (1901-1954) was headmistress of the Oxford School in Hartford, Connecticut. Her husband, the American poet Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931) is considered a founder of modern singing poetry. Married in 1925, the couple moved from Spokane, Washington to his childhood home in Springfield, Illinois in 1929 during the Stock Market Crash. Struggling to support his younger wife and children, Vachel Lindsay published 2 volumes of poetry in those latter years and performed odd jobs. Crushed by worries over his finances and his failing health, Vachel Lindsay committed suicide by drinking a bottle of lye, leaving behind his wife and children, Susan Lindsay Russell, Viscountess of Amberley, London and Nicholas Lindsay of South Carolina. Their residence, the Vachel Lindsay House is maintained by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. The recipient Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.…
