4to. 16 pages + a fine folding engraved plate. off-set to the plate, otherwise in good clean condition in a smart modern hardback binding an original paper presented to the Royal Society and printed in their Transactions, in which the author proposes the use of jets of oxygen and hydrogen to ignite a ball or cylinder of lime. Various experiments established that the light produced was of sufficient brilliancy, but economy was not in its favour [not to mention sounding highly dangerous], and with Drummond's employment preventing him from continuing with his experiments, the invention was never fully developed or put into practise [please see our storefront page for shipping information].…

Large lithographed folding map of the island of Malta (overall dimensions 70 x 79 cm), with an inset showing its size and proximity to Gozo and Comino, printed directly onto linen and with full original wash colour. Folding between cloth covers with ties, title in pen to upper cover. A few spots along folds but generally a very clean, attractive example. A curious map of Malta which appears to be an early issue of one later produced by the Royal Engineers Office in 1923.…

"In this work, [Jones] fearlessly exposed the deficiencies of the engineer service, which he attributed to the ignorance and military incapacity of the board of ordnance" (DNB). Bookplate of Sir Charles Wolseley (1769-1849; reform member of parliament during the 1810s and 1820s) on the front pastedown. FIRST EDITION of the posthumously published journal by the captain who came closest to the site where Franklin's expedition ended. "In 1849 Collinson was appointed to command an expedition for the relief of Sir John Franklin, by way of the Bering Strait; he himself had command of the Enterprise, and with him was Commander Robert Le Mesurier McClure in the Investigator. The two ships sailed together from Plymouth on 20 January 1850 but unfortunately separated in the neighbourhood of Cape Horn and did not meet again. The Enterprise passed Point Barrow, Alaska, on 21 August, but the ice forced Collinson to return south and winter in Hong Kong. In 1851 he was again hampered by ice and in 1852 was frozen in at Cambridge Bay for the winter. In 1853 the Enterprise was caught in the ice at Camden Bay, and there passed a third winter. She reached Point Barrow on 8 August 1854, after being shut up in the Arctic, entirely on her own resources, for upwards of three years. Of the many who had searched for Franklin, Collinson came closest to the place where the expedition had ended. Collinson's addition to geographical knowledge on this Arctic trip was very considerable, and would have been tantamount to the discovery of the north-west passage, had this not been already actually achieved by the men of the Investigator" (DNB). OCLC locates only 1 copy of the second edition with 99 pages. Together, 2 volumes in 1; slightly later, half calf over terracotta cloth-covered boards; first and last leaf reinserted; 1854 inscription on the first title page; old ink inscription on front pastedown, inscription in Arabic on the recto of the front free endpaper, math calculations on the verso of the rear free endpaper; overall, a fair copy, but both apparently very rare. Jebb (1793-1863) was a Royal Engineer and Surveyor-General of convict prisons. During the War of 1812 he fought at the Battle of Plattsburgh on Lake Champlain. He was also a noted prison designer.…
