In May 1885, Kennan began this voyage across Siberia. He had been very publicly positive about the Tsarist Russian government and its policies and his journey was approved by the Russian government. However, in the course of his meetings with exiled dissidents during his travel, notably Nikolai Mikhailovich Yadrintsev, he changed his mind about the Russian imperial system. On his return to the United States in August 1886, he became an ardent critic of the Russian autocracy and began to espouse the cause of Russian democracy. Kennan devoted much of the next twenty years to promoting the cause of a Russian revolution, mainly by lecturing. This is a fine 1753 map of the Nivernais, Berry and Bourbonnais Regions of France by Robert de Vaugondy. It depicts the region from Sully south to Sermur and from Loches east as far as Roanne and covers the whole or parts of the departments of Indre, Nievre, Yonne, Allier and Cher. The map renders the entire region in extraordinary detail offering both topographical and political information with forests and mountains beautifully rendered in profile. The important cities of Bourges, Nevers, Moulins, Chateauroux, Montlucon, etc. are identified. Part of the prestigious Burgundy or Bourgogne wine region, the Nievre region is known for its production of Pouilly Fume, a white wine. The word 'fume' is French for 'smoke,' and it is said the name comes from the smoky quality of these wines. Yonne is one of France's premier Burgundy wine regions and produces some of the world's finest reds. Yonne is also one of only two departments that produce Chaource cheese. Chaource is a cow's milk cheese, cylindrical in shape. The central pate is soft, creamy in color, and slightly crumbly, and is surrounded by a white penicillium candidum rind. Allier is known for its production of Saint-Pourcain wine. It is also one of the rare places in Southern Europe where the freshwater grayling, known in French as ombre des rivieres, occurs in a natural habitat. It depicts from La Chatre south to Domme and from Perigueux east as far as Le Puy, covering the whole or parts of the departments of Haute-Vienne, Indre, Creuse, Puy-de-Dome, Cantal, Correze, Dordogne and Lot. The map renders the entire region in extraordinary detail offering both topographical and political information with forests and mountains beautifully rendered in profile. The Creuse region is well known for its apple cider made from Limousin apples and its internationally renowned Limousine beef. Haute-Vienne is home to the commune of Limoge, which makes oak barrels used in the production of Cognac. This area is also quite famous for its porcelain (Limoge Porcelain) which they have making since the 1700Â's. Puy De Dome is a mountainous department which is part of Auvergne, one of the leading cheese regions in France. Here you can find a wide variety of cheeses including a number of Bleu Cheeses and local specialties such as Savaron and Bleu de Laqueille. The region is also known for its spectacular volcanic rock formations. Cantal is known for its production of Cantal, a firm cheese, named after the region. Correze is known for its production of Straw Wine, a sweet red or white wine, while Dordogne is famous for its production of Monbazillac, a sweet white wine, and Cabecou, a soft goat cheese. A Closer Look This colorful map covers the wine-growing regions of Germany, concentrated in the country's southwest along the Rhine River in Baden-Wurtemburg, the Rhineland-Palatinate, the Saarland, and a portion of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Rhine River and several tributaries, including the Mosel, the Main, and the Ahr, dominate the map. Riverside cities and towns are noted throughout, along with shading indicating wine-growing regions and various illustrations of vineyards, presses, casks, and the finished product. The text at left reads 'Deutscher Weineinzig unter den Weinen,' which roughly translates to 'German wine, unique among [all] wines.' Wine in the Land of Beer Despite being better known for beer, wine has a centuries-long history in Germany, having been introduced by the Romans. Catholic monks carried on the winemaking tradition in the Middle Ages, developing the Riesling varietal by the 13th century. By the 19th century, German wines were considered among the world's best, a reputation they have regained despite the destruction wrought by the two World Wars. The reasons for Germany's winemaking acumen largely have to do with the Rhine, which moderates the climate of the surrounding lands, the topography near the river (sloping hills ideal for viticulture), and surrounding mountains and forests, which help reduce strong winds and floods.
