Introductory narrative by Kenneth Clark. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 - 2 May 1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, he also became known for his notebooks, in which he made drawings and notes on a variety of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and paleontology. Leonardo is widely regarded to have been a genius who epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal, and his collective works comprise a contribution to later generations of artists matched only by that of his younger contemporary, Michelangelo. Born out of wedlock to a successful notary and a lower-class woman in, or near, Vinci, he was educated in Florence by the Italian painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio. He began his career in the city, but then spent much time in the service of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. Later, he worked in Florence and Milan again, as well as briefly in Rome, all while attracting a large following of imitators and students. Upon the invitation of Francis I, he spent his last three years in France, where he died in 1519. Since his death, there has not been a time where his achievements, diverse interests, personal life, and empirical thinking have failed to incite interest and admiration, making him a frequent namesake and subject in culture. Leonardo is identified as one of the greatest painters in the history of art and is often credited as the founder of the High Renaissance. Despite having many lost works and less than 25 attributed major worksâ"including numerous unfinished worksâ"he created some of the most influential paintings in Western art. His magnum opus, the Mona Lisa, is his best known work and often regarded as the world's most famous painting. The Last Supper is the most reproduced religious painting of all time and his Vitruvian Man drawing is also regarded as a cultural icon. Revered for his technological ingenuity, he conceptualized flying machines, a type of armored fighting vehicle, concentrated solar power, a ratio machine that could be used in an adding machine, and the double hull. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or even feasible during his lifetime, as the modern scientific approaches to metallurgy and engineering were only in their infancy during the Renaissance. Some of his smaller inventions, however, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire. He made substantial discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, hydrodynamics, geology, optics, and tribology, but he did not publish his findings and they had little to no direct influence on subsequent science. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.

About the book >.>.> Carlton House: The Past Glories of George IV's Palace provides a detailed exploration of the historical significance and architectural evolution of Carlton House, the London residence of George IV. Beginning with a letter from the Prince of Wales in 1783, the text outlines his intentions for extensive renovations to enhance the house, which he hoped to occupy by the following month despite acknowledging its unfinished state. Over the next forty-two years, George IV engaged in numerous alterations to the structure, driven both by changing tastes and the need to address the building's physical constraints. The book delves into the specific challenges associated with Carlton House, located on the site of Waterloo Palace. The original layout proved inadequate for royal needs, leading to ambitious, albeit ultimately abandoned, plans for expansion, including the addition of wings and a complete rebuild in later years due to financial limitations. Despite its shortcomings, visitors frequently lauded the palace for its elegance and design. Notable figures such as Horace Walpole praised its 'august simplicity' and delicate ornamentation in the mid-1780s, asserting its position as a potential contender for the title of 'the most perfect in Europe.' By the early 1820s, Carlton House garnered further acclaim, with descriptions likening its grandeur to Mahomet's Paradise and being hailed as the finest palace worldwide.Through these reflections, the book captures the artistic and architectural ambitions of George IV, revealing how Carlton House functioned as both a personal residence and a symbol of royal aspiration. The extensive renovations not only highlight the evolving preferences in royal architecture but also reflect the cultural and social dynamics of the period.

About the book >.>.> Sevres Porcelain from the Royal Collection is a detailed exploration of the distinguished collection of eighteenth-century Sévres porcelain housed within the Royal Collection. This exhibition showcases a broad selection of these exquisite pieces, which have historically been preserved within the private apartments of Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace until their recent display at the China Museum in Windsor Castle. The significance of this porcelain collection has been well recognised through the years. Notably, Queen Victoria extensively loaned pieces for various exhibitions, including the Gore House Exhibition in 1853, the Manchester Exhibition in 1857, and the International Exhibition in London in 1862. Additionally, a core portion of the collection was on permanent loan to the South Kensington Museum until 1887. In more contemporary times, individual pieces have been featured in numerous exhibitions across Great Britain and the Continent, with a substantial selection showcased in The Queen?s Gallery in 1966 during the exhibition titled George IV and the Arts of France.Since 1907, scholars and enthusiasts have had access to the collection through Sir Guy Francis Laking's comprehensive catalogue, Sévres Porcelain of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle, created under the order of King Edward VII. Despite its dated approach and inaccuracies, Laking?s catalogue is considered a vital resource in the field of porcelain study. It highlights the evolution of scholarship, which has grown increasingly scientific since the publication of Histoire des arts de Porcelaine by comte X. de Chavagnac and marquis de Grollier in 1906. This book serves as a reference point for understanding the authenticity and history of these remarkable pieces, enriching the reader's appreciation of Sévres porcelain.
