Soft cover. Very good. Exhibits light wear along original fold lines. Verso repairs to fold separations. Blank on verso. Size 23.5 x 46.5 Inches. This is a separately issued large-format 1942 Robert M. Chapin, Jr. map of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans during World War II. Chapin presents the war situation in each of the world's major oceans from an American perspective for TIME Magazine's readers. Both maps emphasize wartime strategies, realities, and conditions specific to each ocean. The Situation in the Pacific On the map of the Pacific, situated on the left of the sheet, two lines stretch between the United States and the South Pacific. These lines represent two critical aspects of the Pacific War. The left line, drawn to resemble a barrier, bears the phrase 'They must not pass.' This line mark's the United States' furthest line of defense and stretches from Dutch Harbor to Midway, Samoa, and New Caledonia. The U.S. Navy stated that this line had to be held to protect American bases and supply lines. These efforts had been mostly successful (the one exception was the attack on Pearl Harbor a year earlier), and red bomb bursts mark battle locations, including Midway, the Coral Sea, and the Solomon Islands. Behind this defensive line, red ship silhouettes highlight the critical trans-Pacific supply lines between San Francisco, Sydney, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand. The Situation in the Atlantic The Battle of the Atlantic bore little resemblance to the difficulties the U.S. faced in the Pacific because of the threat posed by Nazi submarines, or U-boats (short for Unterseeboot). In the Atlantic, the U.S. and Britain sent supplies by convoy, which were groups of cargo ships protected by Navy escorts. Nazi submarines wreaked havoc on these shipping convoys. U-boat attacks sent millions of tons of supplies to the bottom of the ocean and cost thousands of lives during 1942 and 1943. Here, three 'convoys' of red ship silhouettes highlight convoy routes north from New York to Britain and Murmansk in Russia, straight across the Atlantic to support the fighting in North Africa, and south to ports in West Africa or further south around the Cape of Good Hope to ports in the Middle East. Short comments mark areas where the highest number of attacks happen and where 'wolf packs' of German submarines hunted for convoys. Publication History and Census This map is an enlargement of a map created by Robert M. Chapin, Jr. and originally published in the December 7, 1942 edition of TIME Magazine. Two examples are cataloged in OCLC and are part of the institutional collections at Franklin and Marshall College and Pennsylvania State University. References: OCLC 947055145.…

Paper. Zustand: Very good. Handwritten Letters. Series of photographs and handwritten letters from Private First Class Henry B. Ferguson, an African American solider serving in the 742nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the South Pacific during World War II, to Miss Elizabeth Webb of Bradenton, Florida. Twenty-four letters ranging from September 1944 to April 1946. Handwritten on various forms of stationery, including thin blue paper and the War & Navy Department's V-Mail Service. All envelopes torn along one edge, faint wear to corners. Twenty-one photographs of various African American servicemen in multiple locations throughout the Pacific, some with photo album page remnants remaining on verso. Faint wear to corners, a few with handwritten inscriptions. Ferguson's letters primarily center around his loving and longing for Miss Webb, which are only heightened by the intensity of the weather and his work. He often writes of either the "rainy season" the battalion is stuck in, or how impactful the heat is. On February 10th, 1945 he writes "Everybody in the States seems to be suffering from the cold weather, and im sitting down with my shirt off getting a back massage from the heat rash." In July 1945, he wrote "It really looks like i'll be here another year dear. I expect to be in the Philippines in the next month." It is unclear exactly when Ferguson departs the Philippines and returns to the United States, but the final letter from early 1946 shows his return address in Brooklyn, New York. Private First Class Henry B. Ferguson (1922-2001) served in the 742nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery (AAA) Gun Battalion in World War II. Throughout Ferguson's enlistment, which began December 5, 1942, the Battalion traveled to New Hebrides (Oct. 1943-May 1944), Cape Gloucester (May 1944-Nov. 1944), Finschhafen (Nov. 1944-Aug. 1945), and Luzon (Aug. 1945 - discharge). The 742nd AAA Gun Battalion participated in the major battles of the South Pacific, including the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of Cape Gloucester within Operation Cartwheel, and the Battle of Luzon at the end of the Philippines campaign. In 1947, PFC Ferguson married the recipient of these letters, Miss Elizabeth Webb, and had one daughter. Series of photographs and handwritten letters from Private First Class Henry B. Ferguson, an African American solider serving in the 742nd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the South Pacific during World War II, to Miss Elizabeth Webb of Bradenton (illustrator). Signed. …

Very good. Light soiling. Size 15.25 x 22.25 Inches. This is a 1940 Miguel Covarrubias pictorial map of the Pacific. Pictorial vignettes illustrate indigenous dwellings throughout, all of which are labeled according to culture. Plains Indian tepees are labeled as 'Blackfoot', 'Sioux', and 'Kiowa'. An igloo is labeled as 'Eskimo' and an Iroquois longhouse is identified simply as 'longhouse'. This print reproduces one of six murals created by Covarrubias for the Golden Gate International Exposition. The murals were displayed at Pacific House. A History of the Murals The murals were on display in Pacific House, the thematic centerpiece of the Golden Gate International Exposition. The six murals were titled: Peoples of the Pacific , The Flora and Fauna of the Pacific , Art Forms of the Pacific Area , Economy of the Pacific , Native Dwellings of the Pacific Area , and Native Means of Transportation in the Pacific Area . Two of the murals measured 9 feet by 13 feet (four panels each- 'Native Dwellings' and 'Transportation'), while the four others measured 16 feet by 24 feet. After the exposition, they were loaned to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, where they were exhibited until 1953, when they were put into storage. In 1959 The AMNH decided to return the murals to Pacific House, and shipped them back to San Francisco. In transit, one, Art Forms of the Pacific , went missing. They were subsequently exhibited at the World Trade Center, Ferry Building in San Francisco from 1959 until 2001. When Ferry Building renovations commenced in 2001, they were returned to the Treasure Island Development Association (TIDA) and put in storage. In March 2004, the Mexican Government approached TIDA with a proposal for a loan of the five remaining murals. Necessary conservation and restoration work paid for by the Mexican government who sponsored four major exhibitions between 2006 and 2008. After the murals returned to the United States, a handful of exhibitions took place, but all five murals were never again exhibited together. The Golden Gate International Exposition The Golden Gate International Exposition was a 'World's Fair' held to celebrate the two new bridges of San Francisco - The San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. It ran from February 18, 1939, through October 29, 1939, and from May 25, 1940, through September 29, 1940. The Exposition featured, among other attractions, Tower of the Sun and a giant statue of 'Pacifica,' the goddess of the Pacific Ocean, highlighting the exposition theme, 'Pageant of the Pacific.' During the radio broadcast of the opening ceremony, President Franklin D. Roosevelt said: Washington is remote from the Pacific. San Francisco stands at the doorway to the sea that roars upon the shores of all these nations, and so to the Golden Gate International Exposition I gladly entrust a solemn duty. May this, America's World's Fair on the Pacific in 1939, truly serve all nations in symbolizing their destinies, one with every other, through the ages to come. Treasure Island, an artificial island constructed specially for the Exposition, had been intended to be a municipal airport, but instead was turned into a naval base during World War II. It remained Naval Station Treasure Island until 1997. Publication History and Census The original murals were created by Miguel Covarrubias in 1939 for the Golden Gate International Exposition. The sets of the six mural prints were copyrighted by the San Francisco Bay Exposition Company in 1940 and published by Pacific House, San Francisco, California. These prints appear on the market occasionally, sometimes in full sets but more often as individual sheets, like the present example. The present map is cataloged in OCLC and is part of the collection at Northwestern University. The complete set of six prints is well represented in institutional collections. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Light creasing. Size 19.75 x 26.125 Inches. This is a January 1942 Stanley Francis Turner Dated Events War Map of the Pacific and East Asia , published less than a month after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Turner produced the 'Dated Events War Map' series throughout World War II (1939 - 1945), creating more than 25 maps, which, as a whole, present a comprehensive cartographic overview of war events as they unfolded. The present map is the Second Edition, the earliest 'Dated War Events' map we have encountered - we've never seen the first issue. A Closer Look Coverage embraces from Lhasa, Tibet, and Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon) to Reykjavik, Iceland, and from the Arctic Circle to Cape Horn. Black textboxes mark events in the Pacific War from August 1940 (August 20, 1940, U.S.A. leases British ports for joint defense) through January 1942 (January 4, 1942, Chinese victory at Changsha). Most of the referenced events postdate the December 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Earlier events include Japan joining the Axis (September 27, 1940), President Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Lend-Lease Act (March 11, 1941), and the Vichy French surrender of Indochina to the Japanese (July 24, 1941). American, British, Dutch, French, Japanese, and Russian naval bases are marked using specific symbols for each nation. Illustrations of warships and military airplanes fill the Pacific. Color is used to highlight parts of the world under the direct control of the Americans (orange), British (red), and Japanese (black for the Home Islands and Korea and green for the occupied territory, including Manchukuo and French Indochina). Flags also help identify which country controls which territory. Aside from war-related content, cities and towns fill the map. The map also references natural resources key to the war effort, including oil, rubber, iron, copper, manganese, rice, and tea. Three insets appear along the bottom border: British India, a world map, and the transatlantic route between Natal, Brazil, and Dakar, French West Africa (now Senegal). Publication History and Census This map was created by Stanley Francis Turner, printed by R. G. McLean Limited, and published in 1942 by C.C. Petersen. We note 2 examples cataloged in OCLC: University of Houston and the University of Wyoming. An example is also part of the David Rumsey Map Collection. It ranks among the scarcest of Turner's Dated Events maps. This is the first time we have handled an example. References: Rumsey 10407.000. OCLC 48181730.…
