The item relates to a celebrated Victorian scandal. In 1884 Frederic had come to England with his wife and five children as the London correspondent of the New York TImes. He set up a second household with Kate Lyon, with whom he had a further three children. Lyons was a Christian Scientist, and when Frederic suffered a stroke in 1898, she tried to cure him by faith healing. At the instigation of Mrs Frederic, Lyon was tried for manslaughter, but was acquitted.…

Otherwise text clear and entire. Cust's aunt has informed him 'that she has at present in her possession in London all the papers belonging to Sir John Cust that remain'. She does not however think that they contain much about Wilkes. Cust is 'tremendously busy' and will not be able to examine them 'for a week or two', so Bleackley might want to visit her himself ('The Lady Elizabeth Cust 13 Eccleston Square'). 'I have paved the way for you in a sense already.' Offers 'a small furnished house in town', belonging to 'my relatives, Mrs Gerald Talbot & her daughter'.
