Air Commodore Sir Hughie Idwal Edwards, VC, KCMG, CB, DSO, OBE, DFC (1 August 1914 - 5 August 1982) was a senior officer in the Royal Air Force, Governor of Western Australia, and an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross. Serving as a bomber pilot in the Royal Air Force, Edwards was decorated with the Victoria Cross in 1941 for his efforts in leading a bombing raid against the port of Bremen, one of the most heavily defended towns in Germany. He became the most highly decorated Australian serviceman of the Second World War.

This copy of Turncoat brings together two pilots and second world war heroes who both had remarkable escapes after being shot down. Air Commodore Sir Archibald Little Winskill and Air Marshal Sir Denis Crowley-Milling. This is Crowley-Milling's copy with his printed name and address in Fakenham to the front free end paper, the address is crossed out and his new address (Henley-on-Thames) written in, presumably, in his hand. Enclosed is a typed letter to Denis from Winskill who had borrowed the book from Crowley-Milling and SIGNED 'Archie'. He has also indicated on the letter the pages in the book relevant to his story, both men appear in the index. Also enclosed are two flown covers, each one SIGNED Sir 'Archibald Little Winskill' and Air Marshal Sir 'Denis Crowley-Milling', with information cards inside each. Fine. - Two letters, the first dated "March 29th/34" is a 4 page letter "written from 1112 Park Avenue New York" with the return address of "22 Chester Street, London SW. 1" It consists of over 240 words penned on 4 sides of 6-1/2 inch high by 5-1/8 inch wide cream…y white paper. In this first letter, Fellowes expresses his conviction that "I think I shall be able to get my colleagues to accept your offer of closing down the contract" for a series of lectures. As he will expect to make a profit, he states that he "would not come over unless you could let me know when you had been able to secure a fairly full list of engagements." He mentions that his wife would have to arrange for the expenses of Lieutenant Colonel Stewart Blacker's wife. "We are both particularly anxious to visit the West Coast & if the majority of my engagements lay in that direction I should avoid circumscribing Blacker's [i.e. Lieut.-Col. Stewart Blacker] activities. I feel there is a great chance he may be coming over too." Signed "Peregrine Fellowes". The second letter, dated "April 11th/34" is a 5-1/2 page letter consisting of over 320 words penned on 6 sides of two 7 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide sheets of "Peover Hall, Over Peover, Cheshire" stationery. Following up with Pond, Fellowes writes that "We are now negotiating with Gaumont British to obtain a definite agreement as to our lecture rights over the main film." He informs Pond that his colleagues are agreeable to the terms and says that "Colonel Etherton [Colonel Percy T. Etherton] who is a very good & amusing lecturer would be willing to bring over some really excellent Indian short films of Nepal & Sikkim & lecture under your aegis for the whole season." He closes with a postscript stating that "Blacker won't be coming over until 1935 & has not yet definitely settled anything." Signed "Peregrine Fellowes". Both letters are in near fine condition and are offered together with Pond's 50-page illustrated brochure "Announcement of Attractions 1933.1934" for lectures under the aegis of the Pond Bureau. The brochure includes a full-page announcement of a lecture titled "The Mount Everest Flight. The official story of Man's Conquest by Air of the last of the world's unexplored areas, told by Air-Commodore P.F.M. Fellowes". Air Commodore Peregrine Forbes Morant Fellowes (1883-1955) led the expedition and planning for the first flight over Mount Everest in 1933. He co-authored, with Stewart Blacker and Percy Thomas Etherton, "First Over Everest! : The Houston-Mount Everest Expedition, 1933", published by John Lane in that year. Although Fellowes led the expedition, he did not actually fly in it except for his reconnaissance flights. The flights themselves were piloted by Douglas Douglas-Hamilton (Lord Clydesdale) and David McIntyre with Stewart Blacker and Sidney Bonnett in the observer seats. As an airman, Peregrine Fellowes led a raid against the lock gates at Zeebrugge in the First World War during which he was wounded, crash landed in the North Sea and rescued by the Germans. He spent the remainder of the war as a POW. He later served in the Middle East and opened the first regular air route between Cairo and Baghdad. He was selected to lead the first Everest Air Expedition in 1933. Making use of specially designed Westland Wallaces, the expedition made the first successful flight over Mount Everest and, though Fellowes didn't fly himself, his organizational and diplomatic skills were crucial to the success of the challenging expedition. The main difficulties resided in keeping the crew alive in the low pressure and cold temperatures at this elevation. Fellowes and Stewart Blacker, who flew in one of the observer seats, obtained the necessary papers from the various governments, including those of India and Nepal. Tibet refused permission. They convinced the Royal Geographical Society that they'd provide valuable information for the subsequent 1933 British Mount Everest Expedition to the summit and also seek evidence as to George Mallory and Andrew Irvine's disappearance during their 1924 climb. Requiring clear weather over the mountains, Fellows reconnoitered on a daily basis by flying a Puss Moth plane every morning for 9 days before conditions were found to be reasonably suitable. The expedition set milestones for development in aviation technology and photography. Though the aerial photographs were too late to assist the 1933 British climbers, they were later used by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to plan their route to the top of Everest in 1953.

A well-presenting example of an incredibly scarce title, with no similar copies to be found on the public market. Commodore David Porter (1790-1843) was an officer in the United States Navy, serving during the First Barbary Wars and the War of 1812, as commander of the USS Essex. Under his leadership, the Essex captured numerous British whaling ships in the Pacific, significantly disrupting British maritime activities. Porter's innovative tactics and bold strategies marked him as a pioneering figure in naval warfare. After the War of 1812, he faced court-martial for overstepping his authority during an unauthorized mission in the West Indies and was convicted. Porter never accepted the verdict and resigned in 1826. Soon after he enlisted with the Mexican Navy as its commander-in-chief from 1826-1829. This copy belonged to Charles Fleischmann III, the great-grandson of the founder of the Fleischmann Yeast Company which opened in 1868 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After promoting the business at the 1876 Centennial Exposition the Fleischmann Yeast Company became the largest producer of yeast in the world. Includes two foldout maps, one of the American continent and the second a hand-colored illustration of the topography of South America, with some splitting at seams of the first map. Marginal tear to front free endpaper [Aa] and dampstaining to lower margin, not affecting text. (Sabin 6333) Signed by Oliver Hazard Perry on front free endpaper, with the following inscription: "Com'o. O.H. Perry / US Ship John Adams." Additional signature by his wife (Elizabeth Champlin Mason Perry) below the signature: "Mrs. E.C. Perry / Feb'y 1845 / Brooklyn." Provenance: Book was passed down through the Perry family. Sold at Sotheby's, 2018. In 1818, the Perry-Elliott affair came to a head when Perry wrote to Navy Secretary Benjamin Crowninshield preferring court-martial charges against his former subordinate. Not wishing to expose the nation to the controversial aspect of Perry's splendid victory on Lake Erie, President James Monroe offered the prestigious title of "Commodore" to Oliver if he'd drop the charges against Elliott. Upon accepting that offer in early 1819 Perry set sail for the Orinoco River, Venezuela, aboard the frigate John Adams (carrying this very book with him) accompanied by the schooner Nonsuch, there to discourage piracy, while maintaining friendly diplomatic relations with the Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Buenos Aires. Shifting his flag to the shallow-draft Nonsuch Perry sailed upriver to Angostura to negotiate an anti-piracy agreement with President Simon Bolivar. A favorable treaty was signed on August 11 with Vice-President Francisco Antonio Zea in the absence of Bolivar (who was engaged in the liberation of New Granada), but when the schooner started downriver, many of her crew, including Perry, had been stricken with yellow fever. Despite the crew's efforts to reach Trinidad for medical assistance, the commodore died on board Nonsuch on August 23, 1819, his 34th birthday, as the ship was nearing Port of Spain, his flagship John Adams in sight. He was buried in Port of Spain with great honors while the Nonsuch's crew acted as honor guard. Perry's remains were taken back to the United States in 1826 and interred in Newport, Rhode Island. Originally interred in the Old Common Burial Ground, his body was eventually moved to Newport's Island Cemetery. The first American edition of Spanish America, from the personal library of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, inscribed by him enroute to South America aboard the U.S.S. John Adams. (illustrator). In den Warenkorb5½'' x 3½''. Divided back. High gloss monochrome post card. Maud took over as captain of the destroyer Somali in September 1942 when her captain, Jack Eaton, was taken ill. SIGNED by Maud to the rear 'Escort in large Russian Convoy 23/9/42 Torpedoed and taken in tow by another destroyer but Board of Admiralty regrets to announce… that having been in tow for 3 days in bad weather ship broke in two and sank. Lieutenant Commander C. D. Maud D.S.C. R.N. in command | 23rd September 1942.' Somali was hit in her engine room and although taken under tow by Ashanti, on 25 September heavy weather broke the destroyer's back and she sank. Maud was rescued by Leading Seaman William Goad, who dived into the freezing water with a rope, for which Goad was awarded the Albert Medal. Of the 102 men on board, only 35 were rescued. Maud had spent an hour in the Arctic water and credited his survival to the fact that he had drunk a bottle of whisky after going overboard. As a result, he ordered men under his command to carry a bottle of whisky, which proved to be a popular order. On 1 December 1942 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.
