Zustand: Very good. circ [1930's]., [1930's]. Very good. - An 3-3/8 inch high by 2-1/4 inch wide photograph, possibly from a magazine, mounted on white paper stock with an ink ruled frame, itself mounted on a 5-7/8 inch high by 3-3/8 inch brown card stock with an Art Nouveau illustration on the verso. The corners of the portrait and mounts are attractively cropped. The photo depicts the American journalist Walter Lippmann from the shoulders up and is inscribed & signed to the future U.S. Congressman Seymour Halpern along the bottom border of the mount, "To Seymour Halpern with all good wishes / Walt Lippmann". The photograph is lightly rubbed with some light soiling to the mount. Very good. The American journalist Walter Lippmann (1889-1974) is famous for being among one of the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. He also coined the term "stereotype" in its psychological meaning. Throughout his 60 year career, Lippmann critiqued media and democracy through his Public Opinion column and in several books which he authored. Lippmann served as director of Woodrow Wilson's post World War I board of inquiry. His views of the role of journalism were in contrast with those of John Dewey, and their exchange of opinions came to be known as the Lippmann-Dewey Debate. Lippmann was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his column "Today and Tomorrow" and another for his interview with Nikita Krushchev. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.…

First edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the chairman of the Ghanaian National Liberation Council on the front pastedown, "Joseph Arthur Ankrah, Chairman N.L.C., Ghana. With compliments." Above the inscription is the book label of Malcolm MacDonald, a former British high commissioner in Ghana and Whitehall's Special Representative to East and Central Africa, 1965-70. During the second half of the 1960s, MacDonald worked closely with Ankrah to try and bring conflicting parties in the Nigerian Civil War to the negotiating table. He also made a favourable impression on senior leaders of communist China, whose deep-rooted political and practical support for Nkrumah is documented in this accusatory publication. According to Premier Zhou Enlai, MacDonald was "the only capitalist we can trust" (New York Times). "Malcolm MacDonald, British Envoy and Son of Ex-Prime Minister", New York Times, 12 January 1981. Quarto. Tables and illustrations in text. Original red cloth, front cover blocked in black. Cloth darkened in place, light rubbing to extremities, offsetting on title page: very good.…

First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper in Chinese by the Chinese delegation to the Fifth World Festival of Youth and Students, "Presented to our dear young friend from America - China Youth League Delegation, Warsaw, August 1955". Convened by the World Federation of Democratic Youth, the festival took anti-imperialism as its theme. More than 30,000 people from 114 countries participated, and the programme of events included parades, speeches, performances, and sports meets. The proceedings gave everyday Poles an unprecedented opportunity to peek behind the Iron Curtain and ironically helped lay the foundations for the Pozna Protests. Sino-American relations remained strained amidst the fallout from the Korean War. One year earlier, at the Geneva Conference, John Foster Dulles had famously refused to shake hands with Premier Zhou Enlai. In Warsaw, to protest American hard power, China's representatives joined Russian and Japanese young people in a spirited rendition of the song "Never Let the Atom Bomb Explode Again". Building bridges with left-wing Americans sympathetic to Beijing was likewise an important part of the Chinese delegation's strategy. Below the presentation inscription is another reading (in Chinese) "Long live friendly relations between Chinese and American youth! Liu Meiqing". Martin Parr & WassinkLundgren, The Chinese Photobook: From the 1900s to the Present, second edition, 2016, p. 160-1. Quarto. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white; floral vignette on title page. Text in Russian, English, and French. Original green boards, tan cloth backstrip, spine lettered and decorated in black, front cover lettered in black, blue and white decorative endpapers. Boards sunned, one tip worn, occasional staining and foxing in text: a very good copy.…

Very good. Verso repairs to centerfold separations. Exhibits light dampstaining in margins. Size 21.75 x 33 Inches. This is an 1867 John Weyss and Nathaniel Michler map of the battlefield of Cold Harbor, Virginia. The map depicts from the Virginia Central Railroad to Emanuel Church and Black Creek Church and from the Linney Farm to the Taylor Farm. The last battle of Union Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign, the Battle of Cold Harbor was a lopsided victory for General Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy, but it would prove to be his last. Grant had achieved the goal of the Overland Campaign and forced Lee into defending Richmond, the capital of the Confederacy, and Petersburg behind a network of trenches and other fortifications. Soon after the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign, more popularly known as the Siege of Petersburg, began. This campaign was a nine-month saga of trench warfare and small battles, culminating in the capture of Petersburg and the evacuation of Richmond by the Confederate government. The Battle of Cold Harbor The Battle of Cold Harbor, which took place only ten miles from Richmond, is remembered as one of the bloodiest, most lopsided battles in American history. General Grant and the Union Army were trying to seize control of the crossroads at Cold Harbor, Virginia, which would have given them access to Richmond. After the initial success of the Union cavalry, Grant sent numerous infantry assaults against well entrenched Confederate lines. Lee's forces held off attacks by the numerically superior Federal army and inflicted egregious casualties, with some estimates calculating nearly 13,000 Union casualties compared with just over 5,000 Confederate losses. In his memoirs, General Grant stated that he had 'always regretted that the last assault at Cold Harbor was ever madeNo advantage whatever was gained to compensate for the heavy loss we sustained.' Publication History and Census This map was surveyed and drawn by Major John E. Weyss under the command of Nathaniel Michler, engraved by Julius Bien, and published by the War Department in Military Maps illustrating the Operations of the Armies of the Potomac and James in 1869. While this map is well represented in institutional collections, it is rare to the private market. References: Rumsey 3881.008.…
