First American printing of the author s much enlarged and revised 1813 London edition, an influential book in the literature of colours and dyeing, first published in London in 1794. The American-born, London-trained physician and self-taught chemist Edward Bancroft (1745-1821) discovered the dyeing properties of the crushed inner bark of the American black oak, in particular a bright yellow called Quercitron suitable for dyeing cotton and linen for which he received a British patent (vol II, pp150 163); he credits Indian dyers with their capacity to produce indigo in a semi-solid form (indigo first produced by the Hindoos, I, p125) and for their skill in dissolving it according to specific operations per formed; he attributes the success of late 18th century European calico printing to experiments made with chemical knowledge which made them superior to Indian craft techniques. Madder imported by the French East India Company in 1760 under the names mongister , manjit and mungeet is discussed in vol II, pp208-209. Bancroft had also dis cussed chemical problems with Christophe Oberkampf, premier French calico printer at Jouy.
