In den Warenkorb6pp., 12mo. In very good condition, adhering to leaves removed from an album. Helps begins: 'My dear Martin, | This is one of the things you excel in - the giving, in a comparatively short memoir, the real aim and end of a life: so that after reading your "In memoriam", one does not care to hear any more details.' Helps 'really…cannot find any fault' in Martin's piece. 'H[er]. M[ajesty] [i.e. Queen Victoria] must, I think, be exceedingly pleased with the book - I mean your work. Then the whole subject of the relation of Stockmar to the occupants of the English throne is most judiciously handled; and there is great skill shown in what is omitted to be said.' He gives 'One single criticism', before complaining that he is 'troubled with cattle plague affairs', and so cannot write at more length. Martin best-known work, his biography of Prince Albert (1874-1880), would be similarly praised for its tact and skill (see his entry in the Oxford DNB). Helps had edited a volume of the Prince's speeches in 1862.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition hard back binding in publisher's original elaborately gilt decorated cobalt blue cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt back, spine and front, all page edges gilt, bevelled edges. Bound by Bone & Son, 76 Fleet Street, London. Quarto. 10'' x 8¼''. Contains red and black printed title, the text block and poe…ms being printed on thick card stock. With 35 wonderful (the re-published edition with 28 plates) full-page single-sided black and white engravings by Arthur Boyd Houghton, the engraved illustrations from famed Victorian era wood engravers and illustrators George and Edward Dalziel. Like George du Maurier, who was a friend of his, Arthur Boyd Houghton had been afflicted by the loss an eye when he was young. However, he continued to paint as well as illustrate: among his paintings were charming paintings of family life, some jewel-like pictures of children, and some small, slightly disturbing works depicting street scenes (Lambourne 371, 183, 133). Lengthy pencil note to the front paste down 'Xmas 1865 - This year also saw 'Home Thoughts and Home Scenes', a book with 35 drawings of children by A. Boyd Houghton by Routledge, 1865, which was afterwards republished as 'Happy Day Stories'. This book is absolutely essential to any representative collection of the period, but nevertheless its designs can hastily be regarded as among the artists masterly works. Houghton is said to have taken more pains over these drawings than any others. His style in them is as far removed as possible from his later impressions, therefore the book is essential to a collection of his work.' Spine repaired with webbing exposed to the spine edges, plate number 6 with bottom corner missing, 'Age and Youth' poem with tear to the top edge, 'The Sports of Childhood Show the Future Man' poem with repaired tear across the centre of the leaf, heavy foxing to the front and rear end papers and to the margins of the plates and text block. Extremely scarce. Member of the P.B.F.A. ILLUSTRATED (Picture Book).

In den WarenkorbRegarding the Sheffield Wesleyan Conference of 1875 see the article in the Spectator, 14 August 1875, 'The Wesleyan Ultramontanes', and the long review of the conference minutes in the London Quarterly, no.45, vol.89. The present item is 2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An interesting gossipy letter from a…committee member at the conference, satirising two of the others present as 'Mr. Pepys in Conference' and 'Those who approve'. 2pp., 12mo. Harvard begins by discussing the confirmation of the 'Stations' (resolutions?), which are 'incourse [sic] of printing' and will be distributed to 'Representatives' before reaching Walker, adding: 'There is no change in your appointment, and Mr. Sharr stands for Liverpool Brunswick'. He continues: 'I wrote you a letter, under a sudden impulse, which after thought prohibited my sending to you, and I have been too busy to write again. Yesterday and to day [sic] have had painful debates, which have ended well after all; but these interjections have sadly protracted the ordinary business. A good deal of cause of misunderstanding has, however, been exploded away. "Mr. Pepys in Conference" has been very generally condemned as , and The Methodist is to be more worthy of its name.' He comments on the appointment of 'Mr. McCullagh' as chairman. 'We are now pushing on with review of committee business[.] "Those who approve" is very frequently sounding from the platform, and surprising unanimity characterises the result of the appeal.' He explains that he will be leaving before the delegates 'complete', 'in order that I may secure a quiet day on Saturday, against the Lord's Day services'. He hopes for 'a few hours' quite conversation' with Walker, 'during the little time you are yet in Liverpool'. He ends by stating that he has Walker's 'Annuitant Receipt', which he prefers to giver to him, 'as I send this to your old home, rather than to Waterloo'.
