Very good. - A 5-3/8 inch high by 3-3/8 inch wide real photo postcard with a soft-toned full-length portrait of the English actress Maudi Darrell as Mome Modiste in "The Talk of the Town", signed diagonally in ink by Maudi Darrell. The unused card is… identified on the verso as from the "Rotary Photographic Series". Very good. The English actress Maudi Darrell (1882-1910) performed on both the London and New York stages. Darrell also performed in Vaudeville and was on of the fashionable young women known as "Gaiety Girls". Her printed name is misspelled "Maude" on the postcard.

Glue stains on the verso would indicate that the card was once mounted into an album. Very good. Born in Berlin to American parents, the American stage… actress Katharine Cornell (1893-1974) was dubbed "The First Lady of the Theater" by the critic Alexander Woolcott. Beyond the stage, she was also a writer, theater owner and producer. Raised in Buffalo, New York, she married the stage and film director Guthrie McClintic who often directed those serious Broadway dramas in which she starred. She is perhaps best known for her portrayal of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the 1931 production of "The Barretts of Wimpole Street" and was the first performer to receive the Drama League Award for her 1935 portrayal of Juliet in "Romeo and Juliet" and a Tony Award for her portrayal of Cleopatra in the 1947 production of "Antony and Cleopatra".

Responding to Jean Dalrymple, Jack Morrison writes "As to your question, how many community theaters there are including regional and school theaters--nobody kno…ws!" "There probably are 'over 100,000' if you count every little company in a church basement or whatever in a given year." Though Peter Zeisler at Theatre Communication Group knows how many "regional professional theaters" there are, it's impossible to know how many amateur groups there are, especially if one considers "theater to be every high school that puts on at least one play a year." Signed "Jack". Folded for mailing with a pencil line by Jean Dalrymple indicating she has read the letter. Else, fine. The executive director of the American Theatre Association Jack Sherman Morrison (1912-1997) married James Cagney's sister Jeanne Cagney in 1953. He had served as director and dean of numerous university theatre programs before being appointed as executive director of the ATA. He was the recipient of the UCLA Life Achievement Award in 1980. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

The first piece named is 'The Silver Lining (the St James's Comedy)', in which he says there are 'only 4 Men & 3 women exclusive of Helen Maltravers'. Other plays are name…d with the numbers required, including 'A New Drama in 3 Acts by John Oxenford written for the Princess's Theatre - there are but 2 Men & 2 women excluding Miss Aylmer's part.' Postscript reads 'If it should meet your Views Miss Aylmer would play "Leah" for her benefit - otherwise she would do one of the other pieces named'. The identity of the author is difficult to establish, the address in Bedford Row being occupied by solicitors' offices.
