Jacobs spent his banking career as an officer and assistant vice president at the Girard Trust Company in Philadelphia. The Thayer Role: The Thayer family was deeply integrated into the executive leadership of Philadelphia's rail and financial institutions. Notably, John Borland Thayer II (the prominent cricket player and Pennsylvania Railroad executive who tragically died on the RMS Titanic) and his son, John B. Thayer III (a Titanic survivor and banking executive), moved in the exact same executive banking circles. The Thayers held substantial financial influence and board-level associations with the major trusts of Philadelphia, including Girard Trust. Reginald R. Jacobs lived in Haverford, Pennsylvania, while the Thayer family estate ("Red Rose Inn" and subsequent properties) was located in neighboring Haverford and Bryn Mawr. As Main Line residents, they shared membership in the same country clubs, historical societies, and philanthropic boards.] A harrowing, essential first-hand memoir that offers one of the most vivid and historically significant accounts of the maritime disaster. Originally self-published in 1940 as a private family record of 500 copies. John B. "Jack" Thayer III (17 years old at the time of the sinking). Because Thayer wrote this primarily for his children rather than commercial sensationalism, the tone is remarkably earnest and straightforward. It covers the initial "almost unfelt" collision, the chaotic final moments on deck, and the auditory horror of the cries of the dying victims floating in the water. The most profound legacy of Thayer's account is its historical accuracy. Thayer insisted that the Titanic broke in half as it sank, a claim that was widely dismissed by official inquiries and other survivors at the time. He worked with an art teacher aboard the rescue ship Carpathia, Lewis Skidmore, to create sketches showing the ship breaking apart. Near Fine with light rubbing to spine and covers, small bit of paint to bottom cloth at edge, modest edge wear and faint toning to contents. An account by a survivor who was 17 at the… time of the Titanic's sinking, and one of the 40 or so people who fell off or jumped into the water and was able to survive. His father, also named John, was not so lucky. Only 500 copies of this book were printed, privately, for family and friends. While not a commercial success, it did assist a later author in determining the exact location of the Titanic's demise, as well as in determining that the boat split in two before sinking, contradicting conventional wisdom. A very scarce Titanic item. Signed.
