The over exploitation of groundwater resources has resulted in long term continuous decline of water level in many parts of India and elsewhere for the last many decades. This has resulted in the deterioration of water quality and the widespread drying up of wells in monsoon climatic regions due to failure of the monsoon. It is thus imperative that effective management of groundwater resources is essential and it requires firstly a good understanding of the aquifer system secondly that practical measures to control abstraction can be identified and thirdly augment groundwater resources through artificial recharge. It is therefore essential to quantify the response of the aquifer under study to different input output stresses. Groundwater modeling study has proved to be potential tool to study the aquifer response and thereby to evolve appropriate management schemes. The present book is the improved version of the earlier book on regional groundwater modeling by incorporating both the basic theory (aquifer and its characteristics mathematical formulation solution techniques data requirements model conceptualization model construction and calibration procedures and sensitivity analysis) and model application to assess the groundwater potential and pollution potential. This book is written under the utilization of retired scientist scheme of Department of Science and Technology Govt. of India New Delhi. 382 pp.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The demand for water resources is increasing day by day due to ever increasing population, mostly from developing countries. This has resulted in abstracting more water from the subsurface stratum and forcing the water managers to manage the limited groundwater resources in a more scientific way, which in turn needs a more sophisticated way of assessing the underground resource and manage it optimally. There is an urgent need to locate high yielding boreholes in the hard rock region by using geophysical methods. Electrical imaging technique in conjunction with remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) technique has proved to be a potential tool for the purpose. Hydrodynamics of fractured aquifer system in hard rock region is not yet fully understood. The understanding of the groundwater pollution migration in porous and fractured aquifer system and the seawater intrusion in the coastal aquifer has to be improved further. Various aspects of groundwater modeling and in particular issues related to model calibration, validation and prediction has to be understood in much better way. One should integrate all the above issues for effective understanding of the assessment and management of groundwater resources. There is a need to have a comprehensive book to deal with all the above. My former colleague, Dr. M. Thangarajan, Retired Scientist-G, NGRI, Hyderabad, India has successfully edited a book on GROUNDWATER (Resource Evaluation, Augmentation, Contamination, Restoration, Modeling and Management) by inviting topics from various experts across the globe.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Your Guide to Effective Groundwater ManagementGroundwater Assessment, Modeling, and Management discusses a variety of groundwater problems and outlines the solutions needed to sustain surface and ground water resources on a global scale. Contributors from around the world lend their expertise and provide an international perspective on groundwater management. They address the management of groundwater resources and pollution, waste water treatment methods, and the impact of climate change on groundwater and water availability (specifically in arid and semi-arid regions such as India and Africa). Incorporating management with science and modeling, the book covers all areas of groundwater resource assessment, modeling, and management, and combines hands-on applications with relevant theory. For Water Resource Managers and Decision MakersThe book describes techniques for the assessment of groundwater potential, pollution, prevention, and remedial measures, and includes a new approach for groundwater modeling based on connections (network theory). Approximately 30 case studies and six hypothetical studies are introduced reflecting a range of themes that include: groundwater basics and the derivation of groundwater flow equations, exploration and assessment, aquifer parameterization, augmentation of aquifer, water and environment, water and agriculture, the role of models and their application, and water management policies and issues. The book describes remote sensing (RS) applications, geographical information systems (GIS), and electrical resistivity methods to delineate groundwater potential zones. It also takes a look at: - Inverse modeling (pilot-points method) - Simulation optimization models - Radionuclide migration studies through mass transport modeling - Modeling for mapping groundwater potential - Modeling for vertical 2-D and 3-D groundwater flow Groundwater Assessment, Modeling, and Management explores the management of water resources and the impact of climate change on groundwater. Expert contributors provide practical information on hydrologic engineering and groundwater resources management for students, researchers, scientists, and other practicing professionals in environmental engineering, hydrogeology, irrigation, geophysics, and environmental science.
