In den Warenkorb8vo in fours, pp. vi, [ii], 129, [1] errata; a fine copy, uncut in the original drab boards, roan spine (since repaired with cloth), printed paper label. Early inscriptions of Ann Beavan, Hereford, dated 1829. First and only edition of poems by Paul Thackwell, who presumably came from Ross, as he signs the preface from that town, 26 June 1820. Only about a fifth of the poems are on religious subjects, and Thackwell shows an interest in secular, descriptive poetry with a longish poem titled 'The Wye', in which he shows some sensitivity to the landscape of 'the rich banks of the meand'ring Wye', and to the ruins which adorn it - those of Goodrich Castle, just below Ross. Thackwell appears to have taken some of his more specific historical information from Fosbrooke's guide, published just two years earlier, also by Farror of the same town. The book came to the notice of the Monthly Review, whose reviewer (November 1820, pp. 331-2) is barely tolerant of Thackwell's efforts, but does find something good to say about his 'poetry of the heart', which 'possesses a beauty of its own'. Three copies only in Copac, at the BL, Cambridge UL and National Library of Wales. Johnson, Provincial Poetry, 900; Jackson, Annals of English verse, p. 452 (implying that Thackwell was the editor, whereas examination of the book shows that he was clearly the author).

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, rare in commerce. The hard-fighting Sir Joseph Thackwell was "an efficient and humane commander" (ODNB) whose deeds during the war earned him Wellington's recommendation for the GCB. When the war began, Thackwell (1781-1859) was given command of the 3rd infantry. Following "the death of Brigadier Cureton in the action at Ramnagar on 22 November 1848, he was transferred to the cavalry division. After Ramnagar, the Sikhs crossed to the right bank of the Chenab. To enable his own army to follow them, [Hugh] Gough sent a force of about 8000 men under Thackwell to pass the river higher up, and help to dislodge the Sikhs from their position by moving on their left flank and rear. Thackwell found the nearer fords impracticable, but crossed at Wazirabad and on the morning of 3 December camped near Sadulapur. He had orders not to attack until he was joined by an additional brigade; but he was himself attacked towards midday by about half the Sikh army. The Sikhs drove the British pickets out of three villages and some large plantations of sugar cane, and so secured for themselves a strong position. Their artillery kept up a heavy fire until sunset, and they made some feeble attempts to turn the British flanks, but there was very little fighting at close quarters. In the course of the afternoon, Thackwell received authority to attack if he thought proper; but as the enemy was strongly posted, he considered it safer to wait until next morning. By morning the Sikhs had disappeared, and it is doubtful whether they had any other object in their attack than that of gaining time for a retreat" (ODNB). At Chilianwala (13 January 1849) and Gujrat (21 February), Thackwell commanded the left brigade of cavalry. In his 26 February dispatch, Gough commended "this tried and gallant officer for his valuable assistance and untiring exertions throughout the present and previous operations as second in command with this force". Bruce highlights the Narrative's "valuable appendix of dispatches". Bruce 4231; Chopra, p. 57; Cockle, India, p. 25; not in Riddick. Octavo. Original red cloth relaid over new boards, relined, spine lettered in gilt and rolled in blind, boards decoratively blocked in blind, edges untrimmed. A little 20th-century red and lead pencil annotation on pp. 11 & 18. Cloth soiled, top edge dusty, contents generally clean: a very good copy.
