It was the start of an artistic cooperation and friendship between two of the 20th century's most innovative artists - a relationship that has never before been documented. Cornell supported Duchamp in creating his "portable museum", the "box in a valise". This rapidly led the two artists to discover their common interest in curious objects: optical devices, broken glass and all kinds of objets trouvés. At the heart of this book is Joseph Carroll's "Duchamp Dossier" (ca. 1934-1953), which was first discovered after Duchamp's death in 1968 and is still unknown to the wider public today. The dossier contains 117 small objects, documents and photographs reproduced in color on double- sided pages on a scale of 2:3. The objects - "trash", souvenirs and letters - are documented and analysed in a detailed text with lavish illustrations. This fabulous book is in first class condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. 234 pages all intact, all pages, text and superb illustrations are in excellent, clean, readable order. The illustrations are of breath taking beauty and are drawn with a scientific accuracy rarely achieved since. The introduction explains the techniques of the engravers and also provides a short history of the Sepp family and their publishing ventures in 18th century Amsterdam. Just a beautiful book.…

This volume is the second of a series which recorded the results of explorations in Egypt planned and financed by Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, Junior, of Philadelphia. By an agreement made with the University of Pennsylvania in 1907, the expedition was to be conducted for five years on behalf of the University, and the antiquities obtained would be presented to the University Museum. Illustrated with no less than 39 leaves of plates, this volume is a seminal archaeological survey of early Christian churches in lower Nubia. Celebrating Ukraine's past in folio and in colour --- A great Ukrainian artistic and academic collaboration, celebrating - under the Russian rule - the country history and past glory. Evarnitskii (Dmytro Yavornytsky, 1855-1940) was a knowledgeable historian, ethnographer and lexicographer with marked pro-Ukrainian tendencies. His vibrant, sometimes lyrical text focuses on the customs of Ukrainian Cossacks and one the lives of some of their heroes, such as Khmelnitskii. Evarnitskii insists on the characteristics and qualities of this legendary people, praising their folk songs and music, "rightly at the first place in the creations of the Slavic genius", and emphasising their military role in protecting Russia against Muslim Turks and catholic Poles. He also subtly suggests that Russian writers and historians haven't properly studied nor sung these heroes of Southern Russia: Evarnitskii mentions only two partial works published before his, making this Little Russia of Days Past the first extensive historical description of these Cossacks. Evarnitskii used both primary and archival sources in his research, allowing him to illustrate his historical accuracy with picturesque anecdotes and traditional stories. A selection of these sources was later published, in 1903, as Istochniki dlia istorii zaporozhskykh kozakov [Sources for the History of the Zaporozhian Cossacks]. Evarnitskii then became, in 1902, director of the Museum of Antiquities of Katerynoslav Gubernia (later the Dnipropetrovsk Historical Museum). Evarnitskii's text explains, as much as it is illustrated by, 20 folio plates beautifully designed by two of the best artists and book decorators of the period, both also Ukrainian. Samokish's striking, dynamic style echoes one of his masterpieces, the celebrated 4-volume 'Tsarskaya Okhota' [Imperial Hunt]. The plates show portraits in colour by Vasilkovskii, framed by lively scenes by Samokish. Both artists had already collaborated for Tsar Nicholas II's coronation album, and later published together an album of Ukrainian folk ornamental motifs. Provenance: Louis Becker, Paris (French bibliophile who gathered a large collection of fashion and costume books in the first half of the 20th century, then auctioned in 1954 in Geneva; described by Lugt as an "importante bibliothèque sur les modes et costumes" (Les Marques de collections de dessins et d'estampes, The Hague 1921-1956, no. 4234); large booklabel to upper pastedown). First edition of Edward Daniel Clarke's magnum opus "Travels in Various Countries of Europe, Asia and Africa" the author's personal account of a fascinating journey throughout three continents. Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R. Cooper after illustrations by E. D. Clarke, Angelica Clarke, Guarenghi, Martin, Dreier, W. Havell, Camporesi, J. B. Lusieri, Morritt, W. Harraden, Grelot, Fauvel, G.
