Edizione originale in volgare della tragedia sacra che inaugura il teatro di Emanuele Tesauro, pubblicata a Torino presso Bartolomeo Zavatta e dedicata al giovane Emanuele Filiberto Amedeo di Savoia-Carignano, di cui l'autore fu precettore ed educatore. L' «Ermegildo» mette in scena la vicenda del principe visigoto convertito al cattolicesimo e martirizzato dal padre ariano Leovigildo. Tesauro trasforma il soggetto agiografico in un grande dramma barocco sull'eroismo della fede e sulla metamorfosi spirituale, costruendo un teatro in cui simboli naturali e allegorie teologiche l'Idra, la Fenice, la Farfalla, il Baco da seta alludono al mistero della resurrezione. L'opera, interamente in volgare (mentre la prima rappresentazione dell'«Hermenegildus» latino risale già al 1621), segna l'avvio del progetto di un teatro cristiano e retorico che culminerà nell'«Alcesti» e nell'«Edipo»; è anche la più compiuta traduzione scenica della poetica dell'argutezza esposta ne «Il cannocchiale aristotelico». Tipograficamente elegante, l'edizione Zavatta si distingue per la pulizia dei caratteri, l'impaginazione ariosa e i bei capilettera e finalini ornati. R.
