In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, of this indispensable pocket tool for merchants, financiers, and other businessmen to convert quantities of Shanghai taels - the currency of trade in the city before 1933 - into Chinese silver dollars, the coin of the realm. In the late Qing and early Republican periods, different cities and provinces in China employed a range of circulating currencies and measures (some more stable than others) pegged to international and domestic standards. In Shanghai, the tael's stability and the prevailing influence of foreign businesses guaranteed that it remained as the financial instrument of choice until monetary unification in the 1930s. The tables cover tael-dollar exchange rates from 1:71 to 1:74.9875 and enable reliable calculations for quantities up to and exceeding one million taels. Duodecimo. Tables throughout; text in English and Chinese; 9 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Original brown bead-grain cloth, front cover lettered in gilt in English and Chinese. Cloth clean, extremities lightly rubbed, fore edge with some foxing, first leaf browned: a well-preserved copy.
