FIRST AMERICAN EDITION.… Pioneering tract exploring causes and treatments of the medical condition of spinal irritation. "The most important contribution, however, to this subject [spinal irritation] up to this time was the classical work of Teale, who was the first to insist that the pains and other symptoms of the disease were due to a morbid condition of the spinal cord, which he wrongly regarded as being of an inflammatory nature" (Ross, p. 168). "But no essay on the subject of spinal irritation, which had yet appeared, was equal in thoroughness to that of Mr. Teale . . . His book may be studied with advantage, as presenting an admirable account of the many diverse phases which spinal irritation may assume" (Hammond, p. 400). Teale was a British anatomist and surgeon who lectured at Leeds Medical School, and was known "as a surgical operator of great brilliance." He was a prolific writer, and his "manual skill is united with a speculative intellect and sound judgment which. . . prompted him to venture successfully on unbeaten paths." One of his many interests was the effect of living conditions on public health, and he lectured about everything from the cleanliness of household drains to the safety of coal fire places.
