A nineteenth century edition of Ellenor Fenn's very scarce volume of fables. First published in 1783, the work is very scarce in all contemporary editions.A charming volume of simply relayed fables and moral lessons, adorned with twenty-nine woodcuts.The work of prolific writer of eighteenth century children's books, Lady Ellenor Fenn (1743-1813), who often published under the pseudonyms Mrs. Teachwell and Mrs. Lovechild. 'Cobwebs to Catch Flies' (1783), a reading primer, was perhaps her most popular work; it went through multiple editions in both Britain and America until the 1870s.With three pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.With the inscription 'Francis T. Palgrave, Dec 17th 1828' to a front blank. This may indicate that the work was given to British critic, anthologist and poet Francis Turner Palgrave when he was four years old. A further inscription reads 'given by my dearest mother to EP - by her to me, Nov. 1844', to the verso of the front free endpaper. In a full cloth binding. Minor loss of cloth to spine tail, with discolouration to back strip. Lacking rear free endpaper. Inscription to front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with light handling marks and spotting throughout. Neat repairs to pages 36, and 39-46. Good. book.
