The artist Gertrude Martineau writes to a recipient who sought to get her father's autograph, "Dr. Martineau is sorry not to accede to your request, but you will easily perceive that giving autographs is a thing to which there would be no end if he once began it." Signed "G. Martineau". There is offsetting to the letter as well as the faint purple bleeding of words from an envelope or other letter once superimposed over this one. Very good.The British watercolor painter, woodcarver and teacher Gertrude Martineau (1837-1924) was the daughter of the British religious philosopher James Martineau. Alongside her sister, she was a member of a small group of woman artists associated with the Pre-Raphaelites. Martineau was one of the earliest female professors at the Bedford College for Women where she directed the school of art. She laid the foundation stone of the Martineau Mamorial Hall in Norwich.The British religious philosopher James Martineau (1805-1900) was influential in the history of Unitarianism. Martineau was Professor of Mental and Moral Philosophy and Political Economy in Manchester New College. He was the brother of the atheist social theorist and abolitionist Harriet Martineau and the father of the Pre-Raphaelite watercolorist Edith Martineau and painter & woodcarver Gertrude Martineau.…

Folded for postage. Good large signature: 'Isobel Baillie'. In response to his enquiry, she reports that she has 'several good pupils who could make satisfactory Sacred Records', but she would like him to hear them first. In what is possibly a reference to Kiri Te Kanawa, she writes: 'One is a young New Zealand girl with a sweet voice and some experience of sacred work.' She end by asking whether he will be in London soon 'and able to spare time to hear her'.…
