In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. D'Orsey was Professor of Elocution at University College, London. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. On aged, brittle paper, with slight wear and discoloration, a few closed tears along folds and traces of stub adhering to second leaf, but with entire text clear and intact. A long untidy letter, with writing u…p the margin on outer two pages. Addressed to 'The Revd. A J D'Orsey' and signed 'Tom Taylor'. The topic is an outbreak of cholera at Madeira, about which D'Orsey has clearly launched an appeal. (He may well be the author of the letter on the subject quoted from in The Medical Times, 4 October 1856.) Begins: 'Dear Sir / I remember you perfectly as my class fellow at Glasgow. [Taylor had spent two sessions there before going up to Cambridge.] I am very sorry that your letter finds me making holiday in the country, instead of at my office, the Genl Bd of Health in London'. (Taylor was appointed Assistant Secretary to the Board of Health in 1850, and was Secretary from 1854 to the Board's abolition in 1858.) Had he been at his post he would have been 'in the very centre of such information as you require'. All he can do is 'write by this post to Mr Session, our Medical Officer, sending him your [?] & letter & requesting him to transmit to you sets of all the Papers in the Office likely to be of practical service to you in your efforts to invetigate for the present, a guard for the future against, the terrible visitation which has befallen Madeira.' If Taylor can in any way 'direct public attention to the sad case of that island it will give me satisfaction to do so, but I shd. think the facts, imperfectly known as they are, wd. speak trumpet-tongued.' 'English benevolence', he feels, 'is seldom backward to relieve distant & strange distress' (the recent Potato Famine in Ireland is presumably too close to home), and 'Madeira is both far off enough & startling enough to rouse the sensibilities of this country.' He is 'far off from even a country town' (he cannot even 'procure a Post Office order' to send a 'mite' towards D'Orsey's appeal), but is sure that Session will be 'prompt' and the books will reach D'Orsey in time. In a postscript he gives his 'address for the next week'.

With 35 wonderful (the re-published edition with 28 plates) full-page single-sided black and white engravings by Arthur Boyd Houghton, the engraved illustrations from famed Victorian era wood engravers and illustrators George and Edward Dalziel. Like George du Maurier, who was a friend of his, Arthur Boyd Houghton had been afflicted by the loss an eye when he was young. However, he continued to paint as well as illustrate: among his paintings were charming paintings of family life, some jewel-like pictures of children, and some small, slightly disturbing works depicting street scenes (Lambourne 371, 183, 133). Lengthy pencil note to the front paste down 'Xmas 1865 - This year also saw 'Home Thoughts and Home Scenes', a book with 35 drawings of children by A. Boyd Houghton by Routledge, 1865, which was afterwards republished as 'Happy Day Stories'. This book is absolutely essential to any representative collection of the period, but nevertheless its designs can hastily be regarded as among the artists masterly works. Houghton is said to have taken more pains over these drawings than any others. His style in them is as far removed as possible from his later impressions, therefore the book is essential to a collection of his work.' Spine repaired with webbing exposed to the spine edges, plate number 6 with bottom corner missing, 'Age and Youth' poem with tear to the top edge, 'The Sports of Childhood Show the Future Man' poem with repaired tear across the centre of the leaf, heavy foxing to the front and rear end papers and to the margins of the plates and text block. Taylor begins: 'Dear Mr Mewburn, I shall not be at Sessions [as a barrister on the northern circuit] any more. I have just accepted an appointment as legal Assistant Secretary to the Board of Health, and I enter on the du…ties of the place on Monday. The salary is £500 per: an: to begin with, with the prospect of increase. I think the work will suit me, and I am sure that the situation will be one of increasing responsibility and duties every day more onerous & useful.' He hopes this step will meet with Mewburn's approval, and asks to be remembered 'most affectionately to all at Larch field'. He concludes 'My vacations in future will be short - but I hope, nevertheless, to be able to spend the first of them, or part of it, in Darlington.'.

Neville has 'much to learn - especially in the very difficult point of modulation of the voice, which shd. be as flexible & transparent to shroud the thought through it, as a robe of India muslin to shroud the form.' He urges Neville to 'work at this night & day', and to 'not be satisfied till you have tamed your rebellious organ'. He should 'always take good advice, & be grateful for pains bestowed upon you by those whose advice & instruction are disinterested, sound, and founded on a high conception of your art.'.
