Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. 1820 First edition pocket sized hardback. Intended as a child's geography book , written and printed during the Regency period. Title page depicts chained slave benath palm tree looking wistful on a beach. Map of Africa facing tile page remarkable for large area (now South Africa) described as "regions unexplored".28 pages of plates,each page comtaining 3 plates. The plates are a little fanciful, depicting the odd giant sea monster eating a bullock, giant bird of prey etc but the scenes of chained slaves beeing led across beaches are poignant. The first few pages have been skillfully hand coloured with a yellow. The map is pinned with a contemporary pin to the blank end paper which has become unattatched. This contains inscriptions and birthday messages dated 1822 and 1831. There is occasional age spotitng . None the less this is a remarkable book in what it presents as known about the far away land to a child, which at the very least must have thought it threatening.…
