Taylor (1914-2011). In the scarce dust jacket. Taylor earned his master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1941 and remained at the school as a research assistant in a field so cutting edge that its name â" solid state physics â" was not coined until six years later. He earned his PhD in 1950 with a dissertation on the properties of germanium (Krapp, Notable Black American Scientists, p. 293). In 1949 Taylor was appointed professor of physics at Morgan State College (now Morgan State University), becoming chair of the department the following year. This volume, which he edited, was published to celebrate the dedication of the school's new science quadrangle. As the introduction explains, 'That Negroes have made important contributions to the field of the natural sciences is an important fact of which neither the lay public nor scientists themselves are fully cognizant. The primary purposes of this volume, then, are to lay before a larger public the achievements of a little-known group of scientists, and to call attention to the valuable resource constituted by the racial group from which these scientists come'. The contents include fifteen academic articles in four subjects: biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, as well as an introduction by physicist Herman R. Branson, a short analysis of current trends in scientific education for Black Americans, and a biographical dictionary. Among the authors represented are W. Montague Cobb, James H.M. Henderson, James Bonner, Samuel M. Nabrit, Lloyd N. Ferguson, David Blackwell, J. Ernest Wilkins, Jr., and Warren E. Henry.

Presentation copy f…rom George Foster Peabody to Leonard Outhwaite with Typed Letter Signed laid in on his letterhead from Saratoga Springs in the year of publication: "My dear Mr. Outhwaite: I hear from Doctor Woofter that you have taken special interest in some of the Negro folk songs and music. I am, therefore, giving myself the pleasure of sending to you a copy of the St. Helena Spirituals, which not only has a number of new songs but has a foreword that I am sure you will find of interest. I am Very Truly yours, George Foster Peabody." The letter is paper-clipped to the right front flyleaf leaving a faint impression on the title page. George Foster Peabody's calling card is neatly affixed. Outhwaite worked as a consultant, anthropologist, and author. He was a staff member of the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial from 1923 to 1928 where one of his fields of interest was American race relations. Peabody was raised in Columbus, Georgia and moved to New York shortly after the Civil War, where he became a banker and philanthropist. He was a social activist, and major benefactor of the University of Georgia. The Peabody award for excellence in journalism was named after him. He also had an association with the author of this book, Nicholas G.J. Ballanta, who was a Sierra Leonean music scholar, composer, and educator who conducted field research of the music of West Africa in the early 20th Century. Peabody persuaded Ballanta to visit Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina to better understand the music of African-Americans and funded Ballanta's field research from 1924 to 1926 in Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (Ghana), and Nigeria.
