John Taylor, officier au service de la Compagnie anglaise des Indes orientales, relate son périple vers l'Inde à travers la Méditerranée orientale, la Syrie et la Mésopotamie, en passant notamment par Antioche, Alep et Bassora. Son récit décrit les difficultés de la traversée des régions désertiques, les populations rencontrées, leurs mœurs et leurs coutumes, ainsi que les routes commerciales reliant le Proche-Orient aux Indes.
