Blue and white cloth binding. viii+473, ills. to 2 chapters numbered by chapter + one other; prev. owner's small gilt label top front pastedown, Foyles sticker lower same, 1964-dated sig. top facing endpaper, numerous, but intermittent marginalia, mostly short blue lines or ticks, some brief comments and some pencil comments by different owner (me alas), these quite tolerable I think and did not spot any underlining. An important multidisciplinary collection marking the centenary of of the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, contributors inc. Louis Leakey, Kroeber, Borde, Magoun, Hilgard, Piggott, Washburn, Hallowell and Braidwood among others, 22 in all. Robert Braidwood (1907-2003) was a professor at Chicago, as were Krogman, at this time, Sol Tax and Thorkild Jacobsen, another contributor (2), so this is clearly primarily an in-house production. I have not checked all the other authors but only Radcliffe-Brown and Le Gros Clark (with reprinted entries) are obviously not Chicago connected. A large and heavy item which will incur additional postage.

First American Edition. Octavo. 24.5cm. Publisher's terracotta cloth titled in gilt to spine. [viii]; 328pp. Light wear and bumping to spine ends and corners of the cloth, some slight darkening in places, bright and strong; internally clean and fresh on glossy paper, illustrated throughout. A very good, handsome copy. Sol Tax is primarily remembered today as the founder of the discipline of "Action Athropology"; a concept that espouses stepping away from the more traditional "hands-off" or non-interference based schools of anthropology in favor of learning from living cultures and applying those lessons to their ancient forebears. One majot upshot of Tax's advocacy and organization for action anthropology was the manner in which it kickstarted 1960's Native American activism and led to an increase in NA activity aimed at redressing of social; disparities, equal opportunities for found nations peoples, and the expansion Native American gaming initiatives. Tax served on the academic review committee for the Native American Educational Services College and was credited as playing a pivotal role in the evolution of Native American educatin initiatives in modern America.
