En la «contralectura» de la carta a los Romanos que en ellas propone, lo que le interesa es abrir… nuevas perspectivas en la encrucijada entre judaísmo y cristianismo tapadas por ambos lados, de forma que se hagan visibles los rasgos del otro Pablo, del judío. Taubes rompe con formas de pensar que se han enquistado dentro de la polarización judaísmo-cristianismo para mostrar que el judaísmo está tan poco encerrado en la religiosidad ritualista como lo está el cristianismo en la espiritual que libera de la ley. Pero, en especial, quiere sacar a la luz la carga «política» de la teología paulina, su polémica política: «Leo la carta a los Romanos como legitimación y formación de una Nueva Alianza social, la ecclesia en devenir, frente al imperio romano, de una parte, y, de otra, frente a la unidad étnica del pueblo judío». El concepto de teología política manejado por Taubes está tomado de Carl Schmitt, que acuñó su sentido y le otorgó la resonancia que posee actualmente. En sus escritos, Taubes hace una arqueología de la modernidad en diálogo con Blumenberg y Buber, Scholem y Hans Jonas, Heidegger y Marcuse, con Rosenszweig, Paul Tillich y Carl Schmitt. En esta lectura gnóstica, la religión -el culto- y la cultura están enfrentados como opuestos irreconciliables. Pues si la cultura le permite al hombre hacer habitable el mundo, le impide, a su vez, recordar su extrañamiento constitutivo del mundo.
