Un volume petit in-12° (13 x 18, 5cm), reliure rigide éditeur couverte de percaline marron, avec sur le 1er plat la simple inscription en lettres dorées: JAPANESE GRAMMAR. Le dos est lisse, sans inscription, et l'ouvrage compte 120 pages. Il s'ouvre sur une "Préface à la seconde édition" et dans celle-ci l'auteur déclare que la première de ses motivations, quand il écrivit cette Grammaire, était de "protester contre l'idée répandue chez certains de ses compatriotes que la langue japonaise était très imparfaite et qu'elle devait en conséquence être exterminée (sic)." Signalons que l'auteur BABA TATUI était fils de samouraï, qu'il commença par être ingénieur de marine, puis qu'il alla en Angleterre où il poursuivit ses études navales jusqu'en 1875. Après un bref retour au JAPON, il revint en ANGLETERRE où il eût l'idée d'écrire la présente grammaire et où il se fit connaitre en se prononçant défavorablement contre "Les Revenus de l'Opium acquis en INDES par les Anglais ", ainsi que par sa critique des "traités inégaux" passées entre le JAPON et l'ANGLETERRE accordant notamment le privilège de l'exterritorialité aux étrangers. Visitant souvent le parlement anglais, entretenant des relations avec des intellectuels libéraux, il eût également en maintes occasions la possiblité de vanter les mérites du parlementarisme anglais , lequel permettait aux aux masses populaires d'être représentées. Par la suite, de retour au JAPON, il ouvrit un cabinet d'avocat mais en 1885 il fut arrêté pour la possession d'explosifs achetés, dit-on, à un marchand anglais. Il dut ensuite, après quelques mois de prison s'exiler aux Etat unis, à Philadelphie, ou il mourut en 1888 après avoir écrit un grand essai politique: The Political Condition of Japan, Showing the Despotism and Incompetency of the Cabinet and the Aims of the Popular Parties". Notre exemplaire présente quelques marques d'usage, en particulier des listes de mots anglais manuscrits avec leur traduction en japonais au verso du premier plat et sur les deux feuillets de fin. On peut lire aussi à la fin de cette GRAMMAIRE une page signalant "The Works of the same Author: 1) AN ELEMENTARY GRAMMAR OF THE JAPANESE LANGUAGE, 2) THE ENGLISH IN JAPAN: what a Japanese thought and thinks about them. 3)THE TREATY BETWEEN JAPAN AND ENGLAND. Signalons aussi la présence d'un ex-libris sur la première page de garde. Mais notre exemplaire peut être cependant dit en ETAT TRÈS SATISFAISANT.
