Good. Some discoloration along fold line and foxing in the margins. Size 8 x 12.25 Inches. This map of Tartary, or Central Asia, from the Black Sea to Tibet was issued in 1780 by Rigobert Bonne. It covers much of the Middle East and Central Asia, including 'Independent Tartary,' which was gradually incorporated into the Russian Empire in the 19th century. A Closer Look This map is small but detailed and beautifully crafted. Towns, religious structures, cities, and mountains are depicted in miniature representations. An impressive, if somewhat imprecise, level of detail greets the viewer. As is reflected here, the territories historically considered as Persia were disunified at this time. The long-reigning Safavid Dynasty was in decline and under attack from multiple directions, including at the hands of the Ottomans, Russians, and Afghans. In the mid-1730s, the brilliant military commander Nader Shah established a new Afsharid Dynasty, expelled the invading forces, and even staged a raid on Mughal Delhi that brought back tremendous riches to Persia. However, in his later years, Nader became cruel and megalomaniacal, inciting revolts and eventually his own assassination in 1747. Afterwards, Persia descended into a chaotic situation with further foreign invasions, until relative calm was restored by Karim Khan of the Zand Dynasty based at Shiraz (here as Shiras). Publication History and Census This map was drawn by Bonne for Guillame Raynal's Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre, Dressé pour l'Histoire Philosophique et Politique des Établissemens et du Commerce des Européens dans les Deux Indes . A beautiful large format 1814 John Thomson map of Tartary - a nebulous term that referred to all of Central Asia north of China and India, and South of the Russian Empire, and from the Caspian Sea, to Sakhalin. A Closer Look Coverage is expansive, illustrating a broad but then poorly understood swath of Asia. It is divided into Independent Tartary, corresponding loosely to modern day Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, and Chinese Tartary, embracing lands claimed by the Qing, including Tibet, the Gobi, and most of Mongolia. In essence, the map is configured roughly along the lines of the old Mongol Empire, with the territories controlled by the sons of Kublai Khan, based in Peking, defined as Chinese Tartary, and the territory to the west of Kashgar, modern day Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, occupied by various independent 'Hordes,' including the Great Horde, the Kirguses Hordes, and the Kharizm. The supposed site of the ancient capital of the Great Khan, Karakum, is noted in the Gobi. A portion of the ancient Silk Road caravan route from Lok Nor to China is recognizable with caravan stops marked, among them the legendary cities of Bokhara, Kashgar, and Samarkand. Within a few years, Russia and England would begin maneuvering to seize control of this area in a decades long conflict known as the 'Great Game'. Publication History and Census This map was prepared and engraved in 1814 in Edinburgh for inclusion in the 1817 first edition of John Thomson's New General Atlas . This is a beautiful 1786 map of Tartary, Korea and Japan by French cartographer Louis Brion de la Tour. Centered on Chinese Tartary, the map details Korea, Manchuria, Chinese Tartary, Russian Tartary, Independent Tartary, and Japan. The map renders the entire region in extraordinary detail offering both topographical and political information. Seoul (Kinkitao) is noted along the River Li (Kiang River). Perhaps the most striking features of the map is the depiction of the Northeast Passage. The Northeast Passage, much like American's Northwest Passage, was a long sought after sea route through the Arctic that would save European merchantman the expense of rounding Africa in order to access the trade riches of East Asia. A beautifully engraved title cartouche adorns the bottom right quadrant of the map. To the left and right of the map are paste downs of French text with remarks and description of the map. Surrounding the whole is an elaborate decorative border featuring floral arrangements, surveying tools, elaborate baroque scalloping, and a winged globe. This map was issued as plate no. 44 in the most deluxe edition of Desnos' 1786 Atlas General Methodique et Elementaire, Pour l'Etude de la Geographie et de l'Histoire Moderne . Very good. Some indications of old manuscript. Hand color. Size 14 x 19.75 Inches. This is Edward Wells' 1700 map of central and northern Asia. The map spans from the near east - Mesopotamia and Persia, and the frontier of Muscovy - to Siberia and Tartary, as well as China, Korea, and Japan. The Best Sources It is drawn primarily from Nicolas De Fer's 1696 wall map of Asia, and via De Fer, presented state-of-the-art cartographic information based on Nicolaes Witsen's 1687 map of Tartary. Though reduced to a single-sheet format, this map represented a simplified version of the most up-to-date cartography of central and northeastern Asia available in the 17th century, which was mpt significantly advanced until the c. 1710 maps of Strahlenberg. De Fer's 1696 Wall Map The weight of Wells' geographical information is drawn from Nicolas De Fer's monumental Asie, divisee selon l'etendue de ses principales parties , a 1696 wall engraved in Paris. De Fer's distinctive presentation of the Caspian Sea, and his presentation of Nicolaes Witsen's groundbreaking Siberian geography are here evident. The inset maps in the upper right, showing alternative theories of northeast Chinese and Siberian geography are based on the Jesuit reports of Martini and Verbiest, also copied (in reduced and simplified form) from the De Fer. Not only the delineations on this map but also the abundant annotations are largely faithfully translated from De Fer's map. A State-Of-The-Art Siberia The whole of the Asian Northeast - everything extending north and east from the Caspian Sea - is here derived from the 1687 map of Nicolaes Witsen, the first European with access to Russian sources for these remote regions. It is perhaps the paucity of data Witsen provides for the Pacific Coast south of the 50th parallel, that encourages the broad speculation on the present map. Witsen's book, Noord en Oost Tartarye ('North and East Tartary') was the century's most authoritative work on those regions. The Inset Maps In the upper right hand corner are two detail maps; both of these focus on the explorations in northern China of Verbiest, and are drawn virtually verbatim from the De Fer wall map. The lower reveals Verbiest's route from Peking to the Chinese frontier in northern Korea, in particular the cities of Leaotung and Ula - this representing the closest that the Jesuit cartographers had come to the Korean peninsula. The upper suggests an alternative mapping of the Yupi Peninsula, supposing that the island north of Japan (Hokkaido) might actually be a peninsula connected to mainland Asia. Publication History and Census This map was engraved by Sutton Nicholls for inclusion in Wells' 1700 A New Sett of Maps both of Ancient and Present Geography . This student atlas was successful and stayed in publication for many years thereafter. This example is of an early state, lacking plate number. As early as 1705, the map was edited to include the plate number '29' engraved below the dedicatory cartouche. There are nine examples of this map catalogued in institutional collections. An example of Ortelius' seminal 1579 map of Tartary, one of the first maps to focus on the North Pacific. While the map is intended to detail Asia under the Great Khan, it is perhaps more notable for what it presents of America. The map includes what is now the west coast of the United States, northwestern Canada, and Alaska, lands then almost entirely unknown. It is the earliest obtainable map to name California. It also displays a strait separating Asia and America - the Strait of Anian - appearing long before Vitus Bering's exploration proved the existence of such. A Closer Look The map is a partial conic projection with coverage extending from the Black Sea to the Gulf of California and from the Arctic to southern China, what Europeans then considered the extent of the Tartar Kingdom. In fact, much of the content north of China is mythical or loosely derived from the journals of Marco Polo, the legends of Prester John, and Biblical sources. A Groundbreaking Map This is one of the earliest maps to attempt mapping northeast Asia. Prior maps relied on ancient geographers, whose concrete data seldom reached beyond Eastern Europe. The present map is also informed by Marco Polo's 13th-century voyages, but Ortelius does much to reconcile the medieval knowledge of Asia with 16th-century revelations of the Western Hemisphere. The Pacific Ocean is optimistically narrow, particularly at the Strait of Anian, encouraging the notion of a close connection between the Americas and the Orient. Treasure Cities in the Americas Near America's peninsular California, six of the legendary Seven Cities of Gold are noted: Chicuich, Axa, Tiguas, Totonteas, Chicana, and Coana. The legend of the Seven Cities emerged in Europe long before Columbus, during the Moorish invasion of Spain. It was said that when the Moors invaded Porto, Portugal, in the early 8th century, the city's seven bishops took their substantial wealth and fled to sea. They landed on an island in the Atlantic called 'Antilla.' There, each of the seven bishops established a city. The island of Antilla actually appears on many early portolan charts of the Atlantic, but as explorers failed to discover the Antilla in the Atlantic, the Seven Cities were relocated to the unexplored American southwest. Richly Decorative and Evocative The map is superbly engraved, with an elaborate strapwork-and-floral cartouche. The Pacific Ocean features a flying fish and a sailing ship plying the Strait separating Asia and America (something no European would do for centuries). In the upper right, the Grand Duke of Muscovy sits in a splendid tent and, in Central Asia, another tent houses the Great Khan. A Text-Rich Map The Asian portion of the map is heavily annotated, revealing much of Ortelius' sources: In Arctic Russia, beyond 70 degrees north: The Nephalites are named Neptali after one of the 10 tribes with a Hebrew name, and after the Danites, who by way of punishment were called the Danes of the Dark North, and they were on account of the claims of Rachel Balbah placed to the side, in the area of the Hudores or Iehudeores; in the year 476 they were victorious in their battle against Perosa. Others call them incorrectly Euthalites. In the ocean corresponding to the East Siberian Sea: The Scythian Ocean, according to Pliny, has sweet water, and he also says it contains many islands, as M. Paulus [Marco Polo] also says, but neither of the two tells about their number or location. Siberia: Tabor or Tybur, center of the area of the Tartars, where once the Holy Books got lost, yet they are united under one king, who in 1540 first reached France and king Franciscus, and later, at the initiative of Charles the Fifth was burnt at the stake for his heresy, because he had secretly endeavored to convert Christian kings to the Jewish religion, about which he had spoken with Charles the Fif.…

This is a 1601 example of Abraham Ortelius' 'Russia, Moscoviae et Tartariae' , the first atlas map of Russia, and the first to be produced based on actual exploration. Its content is based on the travels of English merchant and diplomat Anthony Jenkinson, who visited Russia four times between 1557 and 1571. The map details the lands revealed by Jenkinson's first voyage which lasted from 1557 to 1560. His map, which was provided to Ortelius, was completed after that voyage, in 1562. The Map Ortelius' map spans from Latvia, Lithuania, and the Black Sea in the west to the Ob River and the Syr Darya in the East. The south limits of the map are marked by the Caspian Sea and the Amu Darya River (Oxus, here spelled Ougus ). The copious detail reaching from the White Sea to the Caspian Sea result from Jenkinson's voyage, which was the first recorded north-south voyage through Russia. His route can be traced south along the Oka and Volga Rivers, passing through the Khanate of Kazan, and arriving in Astrakhan, near the Caspian mouth of the Volga. He then crossed the Caspian Sea, joining a merchant caravan and traveling for several months in the Tatar lands of the Nogai Horde, reaching Bokhara before deciding that wars and banditry blocked further passage. Jenkinson's attempts eastwards are also revealed here. Filling in the Gaps Beyond the rivers at the eastern limits of Jenkinson's map, the map is filled with vignettes depicting indigenous scenes, mainly drawn from Marco Polo. Throughout the map there are engraved Tatar warriors and camels, all the excellent work of engraver Franz Hogenberg. In the upper right, Ivan the Terrible himself is enthroned in a tent. Publication History and Census This map was first issued in 1570 to accompany Ortelius' great Atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum , and was one of the first fifty-three maps included in the work. This map appears in five states, of which this appears to correspond to the fourth. (Over the course of the map's printing history, the waves in the Caspian Sea were reworked several times, as well as the hachure on the cartouche. The absence of hachure within the text frame of the cartouche, and the wave pattern in the Caspian best correspond with van den Broecke's fourth state.) The typography of the Latin text on the verso identifies this specific example as belonging to a 1601 edition of the Atlas. This is a handsome 1749 Homann Heirs map of western China, Mongolia and the extreme southeastern border with Russia. It was produced in order to accompany a German translation of P. Du Halde's 1732 Description de la Chine . As such, it is a faithful copy of J. B. D'Anville's Carte Generale de la Tartarie Chinoise which accompanied Du Halde's original text and the definitive mapping of this little-known and ill-mapped region. D'Anville's map - and Du Halde's data - were derived from Jesuit sources. Jesuits, with the blessing of the Qing Emperor Kangxi, produced at a map of the Chinese Empire's frontiers between 1708 and 1717. The Scope of The Map Starting from approximately 33 degrees north, the sheet shows in the south the Chinese regions of Qinghai, Gansu, and Shaanxi. The northern part of the map shows the Russian frontier up to the Onon River. Mongolia and the Gobi Desert lie between. The superbly engraved map includes detailed river networks, pictorially rendered mountains, and numerous caravan routes. There is an extensive descriptive text pertaining to the Gobi Desert, and the speculative location of the ancient capital of the Mongol Empire is noted - 'Terra Kalkarum.' D'Anville's cartography also identifies the ruins of various temples and palaces in Tartary. The map includes Lake Kokonor in the Qinghai Province of China, and embraces part of what is now the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The map is rich in place names and rivers, including several rivers disappearing into the endoheiric basins of the Gobi. Publication History and Census This map was drawn - based on the D'Anville map - for the Homann Heirs firm by Tobias Mayer, and appears to have been a separate issue intended to accompany a German translation of Du Halde's Description de la Chine. It is usually part of a two-sheet map extending to the east and including Korea and Japan. We see nine examples listed in OCLC. References: OCLC 1027785849.…

This fascinating map of modern-day Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, engraved by John Gibson in 1753, was based on Russian maps Jonas Hanway included in his An Historical Account of the British Trade Over the Caspian Sea . Hanway supplemented the results of his own travels to the Caspian with a multiplicity of travelers' journals and the maps of other explorers, compiling an exhaustive collection of the most up to date geographical sources for this area, which remained one of the most obscure regions in the world. The map is centered on the Silk Route capitals of Samarkand and Bukhara, east of the Aral Sea. The cities of Tashkent and Badakshan are shown; the northeastern Caspian Sea and the lower part of the Ural River appears at the west; the eastern shore of the endoheiric Aral Sea is shown as well, but the western shore and indeed all the land between the Caspian and the Aral Sea is obscure. (The nomadic Tatars occupying that region were notoriously ill disposed towards travelers.) The map excels in detailing the regions south and east of the Aral, which include cities having 'plantations of trees' and 'mountains on which the Persians say is Gold and Silver and Lapis Lazuli.' The Orenbergh Expedition Ivan Kirillovich Kirilov (???? ???????, 1689 - 1737), the father of Russian Cartography, took part in Shestakov's expedition to Kamchatka between 1731 and 1733. The experience led him to appreciate the economic and strategic opportunities offered Russia in assessing her more remote provinces. In 1734, he proposed the creation of an administrative center to aid the assessment and exploitation of Russia's southeastern frontier regions. The ambitious project called for the construction of fortresses and even cities in order to extend Russia's influence and the reach of her geographers. To this end, the city of Orenburg was constructed in the southern Urals in 1735, the site having been chosen by Kirilov himself. Specifically, his intent was '.opening up transit routes to Bukhara, Badakhshan, Bulk, and to India'. Kirilov died in 1737, but the bureaucracy he established lived on under new administrators. After several false starts, Orenburg was re-founded in 1743, at the juncture of the Yaik and the Sakmara rivers, its present location. From that time on, Orenburg functioned as both a military and administrative center on the Kazakh frontier. Exploration in the Caspian region fell within Orenberg's sphere of influence. Even the work of English merchant explorers like Woodroofe and Elton would inform the geographical information compiled at Orenberg. This did not guarantee, however, that the material disseminated by the Expedition would be state-of-the-art: the maps based on the Orenberg Expedition that came to Jonas Hanway fell far short of his own maps of the Caspian and the Aral Sea published in the same work. Publication History and Census The chart was engraved by John Gibson in 1753 for inclusion in Jonas Hanway's An Historical Account of the British Trade over the Caspian Sea. We are aware of three editions of the work; this example appeared in the third. We see eight examples of the complete work in institutional collections. We see only three examples of this map catalogued in OCLC, in the 1753 issue, at the Bibliotheque National de France, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Library of Israel.
