Tarnier étudie successivement les causes maternelles et… les causes foetales qui rendent l'accouchement impossible sans manoeuvre ou sans opération. Stéphane Tarnier (1828-1897) fut reçu à ce concours de 1860. Il deviendra (en 1867) chirurgien en chef de la maternité, puis professeur d'accouchement, des maladies des femmes en couches et des enfants nouveaux-nés. cf. Speert, Obstetric and gynecologic milestones, p.481 : "Tarnier was probably the nineteenth century's most astute student of the obstetric forceps and the mechanical principles underlying its use. His monograph of 1860 revealed a long-standing interest in the subject.".

Précieux exemplaire de dédicace. Tarnier a dédié cet ouvrage à HERRGOTT et lui a offert cet exemplaire, qui compo…rte un envoi autographe signé de sa main. Herrgott est un autre grand nom de l'obstétrique et de l'antisepsie. "Il a participé ardemment à la lutte contre la fièvre puerpérale à la Faculté de médecine de Strasbourg, puis de Nancy" (H.Stofft). Il existe deux annotations manuscrites, sans doute de la main de Herrgott : indication du lieu et de la date de la mort de Tarnier à la suite de ses principaux titres indiqués sur la page de titre, et mention "Lauréat et correspondant de l'Institut" à la suite des principaux titres de Herrgot sur la page de dédicace. Très bel exemplaire, à grandes marges et d'une grande fraîcheur, enrichi de coupures de presse. Édition originale très rare. Stéphane Tarnier fut le premier à adapter la méthode de Lister à l'obstétrique, avec l'utilisation du phénol. Il contribua aussi beaucoup à développer l'asepsie, utilisant une technique d'exclusion péritonéale pour la césarienne. Le but constant de sa vie professionnelle, depuis sa thèse jusqu'à la fin de sa carrière, a été de faire disparaître la fièvre puerpérale. Tarnier réduisit considérablement la mortalité maternelle liée à la fièvre puerpérale, qui passa de 9,3 % à 1 %.
