Oblong 8vo. pp. [1, title-page] + 2 leaves of maps + 48 leaves captioned in Japanese and English + [1, colophon]; slightly shaken in the original cloth with string ties, paper label to upper cover, minor wear to label and to extremities of binding. This printed photographic album records scenes during the early months of 1932, when Japanese forces took control of Shanghai. The so-called Shanghai Incident developed after an attack on five Japanese Buddhist monks escalated into anti-Japanese protests in parts of the city. On the 28th January, Japanese planes set off from aircraft carriers to bomb Shanghai, the first major aircraft carrier action in East Asia. The hostilities between Japanese and Chinese forces prompted the League of Nations to send representatives to broker a ceasefire, culminating in the Shanghai Ceasefire Agreement signed on May 5. The present album, a Japanese propaganda publication, shows troops in action, some of the damage wrought by the hostilities, and related scenes.
