hardcover. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Nicholson & Watson, 1944 Formatting: 4to, pp. x, 264. Condition Report: Good. The volume rests in its original beige cloth binding, which remains structurally sound but exhibits noticeable darkening, moderate soiling, and rubbing along the spine ends and board extremities. Internally, the text block is generally bright and tightly bound, though the endpapers bear pronounced rectangular browning and offsetting, likely the historic ghosting of an old protective wrapper. The original, unclipped dust jacket is in Poor condition; while the striking front panel artwork is largely retained, the wrapper suffers from heavy edge-wear, significant chipping to the spine, and a massive, V-shaped area of loss to the lower rear panel that heavily compromises the publisher's printed text. Despite these exterior flaws, the interior pages and vibrant lithographs remain crisp, clean, and entirely unaffected. Catalogue Note: Volume 2, Number 10 of the celebrated literary periodical, published in December 1944. This wartime issue is heavily prized for its striking visual contributions, most notably eight full-page drawings for Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Mervyn Peake, and three original colour lithographs by Gerald Wildem, including a spectacular double-page spread illustrating T.S. Eliot'sÂRhapsody on a Windy Night. The volume also boasts an impressive roster of literary contributors, featuring poetry and prose by Henry Miller, Stevie Smith, Lawrence Durrell, R.S. Thomas, and a moving memorial letter for the war poet Keith Douglas. Copies of this edition retaining the famously fragile wartime dust jacket, designed by Gerald Wilde and Lyne Birch, are scarce on the open market, even when heavily worn. Founded in 1939 by the influential Tamil poet and editor M.J. Tambimuttu,ÂPoetry London quickly established itself as a vital artery of the mid-twentieth-century British literary scene. This 1944 issue stands as a quintessential snapshot of late modernist and Neo-Romantic output during the Second World War. Uniting an eclectic array of established and emerging voices, it serves not only as a formidable literary anthology but as a visual triumph, pairing striking avant-garde art with profound poetic vision. Mervyn Peake and Gerald Wilde (illustrator).

colour-printed folding plate by Graham Sutherland, a few other monochrome illustrations, a Thomas Blackburn poem in manuscript facsimile, small handling mark to border of page with George Barker poem, pp. 112, 4to, original wrappers with Graham Sutherland's Lyre-bird illustration to front, a couple of very light marks, very good. [With:] The flexi-disc of Ginsberg's 'Plutonium Ode' laid in at rear - a little creased to centre but not to playing surface, a small audible scratch on one side though. Contributors include George Barker, Gerald Durrell, Ted Hughes, Elizaebth Jennings, Iris Murdoch, Kathleen Raine, David Gascoyne, et al.; the 'Apple Magazine' section is, Tambimuttu explains, a continuation of a publishing project of The Beatles that their break-up curtailed - it includes lyrics by Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, along with work by Allen Ginsberg, John Cooper Clarke, et al.

Although not stated, these are from the library of Israel "Izzy" Young, former owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, New York. Included in the first four volumes are the likes of e. e. cummings, Robert Graves, Dylan Thomas, Lawrence Durrell, Jack Kerouac, and W. H. Auden. The editor, Tambimuttu, was a Tamil poet, critic and editor.
