Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This brief describes studies conducted by the authors on mid-size drugs utilizing peptides and peptidomimetics, and on the development of anti-HIV agents. Peptides are important biological molecules and have various physiological actions. Peptide-based drug discovery may help bring about the development of useful medicines that are highly safe and show potent pharmacological effects in small doses. Recently, it has been shown that there is an important drug-like space in the mid-sized region between low- and high-molecular-weight compounds. Thus, mid-size drugs such as peptide compounds are being focused on. To date, several peptidomimetics that mimic primary, secondary, and tertiary structures of peptides have been developed to maintain and improve biological activities and actions of peptides. In this book, the features and advantages of mid-size drugs are described in detail. In addition, the merits of utilizing peptidomimetics in the development of mid-size drugs are referred to. Understanding such peptide-derived mid-size drugs will lead to a comprehensive expansion of medicinal chemistry.

Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (Japanese style silk binding).; 0.9 kg, 20 x 27.5 cm.; 58 pages with text plus 50 pages with plates, each page with tissue guard paper.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows edge wear and wear marks on the front cover, spine and back cover. The bottom edges are slightly turning inwards. Small dent near the bottom right side of the front cover. Signs of wear on the interior, namely on the edges of same pages which are slightly worn and also on some of the tissue guard paper of the plates, which are bent in same pages and a few show small chips. A few wear marks throughout the interior. Good condition overall.; The interior is signed and dated by the author on the second page and has an ex-libris sticker glued to that page.; "A prolonged stay in Japan this year gave me the opportunity to get, through the kindness of my friends Baron Kuki and Mr. A. S. Mihara, the collection examined by the well-known experts Messrs. Y. Imaizumi, Director, and S. Fujiya, Assistant Director, of the Department of Fine Arts, Imperial Museum, Tokyo; and their criticism, careful study and verification of the various articles with information of makers and dates, have been most interesting and valuable. I was glad to find that the collection was considered a good one and that it proves to be fairly representative in makers and periods; I know it contains many good pieces which cannot be surpassed. My friends T. B. Glover, B. H. Chamberlain, and J. Conder, old residents in Japan have assisted me in obtaining many pieces from private owners and old-fashioned dealers not accessible to the ordinary "globe- trotter;" and from Mr. Nomura of the well-known and reliable "Samurai Shokai" Store, Yokohama, I have obtained several of the older period articles. It is quite impossible without seeing a gold really good piece of lacquer, especially, to have any idea of the wonderful beauty of the work, and the photographic illustrations give no idea of the brilliancy and colouring of so many of the articles, but only show shapes and designs thus leaving much to the imagination; however, this little catalogue will serve as a "reminder" to those who have seen some of the pieces. It may be noticed that few of the lacquer articles are "signed." It is a pity that practically only Inros were signed and some of the best of these were not inscribed. It is therefore difficult for a non-expert to tell whether lacquer is genuinely old or not and to fix with any degree of accuracy the period of articles. I am informed that in old days no lacquer articles, made for the court or the nobility, were signed, although all metal work used for military purposes, such as swords, tsubas and other ornaments, was signed, often at length, by the makers. It would seem therefore as if it had not been the fashion, for the old lacquer articles were highly esteemed and honoured. At present, signatures are invariably added to imitations, and being an attraction, are sought after by the unwary buyer. I have to specially thank my good friend, W. B. Mason, of Yokohama, for advice and help in many "curio-hunts" and for kindly seeing to the printing of this little book, which, as will be seen, is conversational and does not pretend to be "literature."" excerpt from the introduction by James Orange. Frontispieces are colored collotype prints of flowers. Plates are hand-colored albumen prints. "Japan: Described and Illustrated by the Japanese" was a multi-volume series of books published by the J. B. Millet Company between 1897 and 1898. The project was conceived by publisher Josiah Byram Millet, who secured financial backing from the Japanese government. The series is notable for its use of over a million hand-colored albumen prints, a more expensive and time-consuming process than the photomechanical methods common at the time. Although not credited, the photographs were supplied by the commercial photographer Tamamura Kozaburo, who reportedly hired more than 350 assistants to fulfill the large order. The text contributions from Japanese scholars were organized and translated by Captain Francis Brinkley. There were at least 16 different folio multi-volume editions released. 1403872. 50 hand-tinted albumen prints (30 captioned with studio stock references) mounted on thick gilt-edged card leaves19.5 x 25 cms, in an album 27.5 x 35 cms; elaborately lacquered boards (scuffed and chipped) inlaid with mother of pearl (with loss) over quarter calf (renewed), bevelled edges, gilt dentelles, endpapers gilt-flecked, some fading and spotting to the images and toning to the margins of the card leaves, but a very good, handsomely bound collection. Beautiful studio album containing a collection of 50 hand coloured photos of Japan, with a splendid lacquered and decorated cover. The photos were commercially produced images which were sold to foreign visitors who had the studio place photographs in an album of their choice. This album is unusually interesting because (unlike many where photographs were more randomly placed) the images have been selected and arranged geographically, beginning in Tokyo and moving southwards: Nikko, Yokohama, Miyanoshita & Hakone Lake, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nagasaki. There are fine images and portraits of geisha, including an uncaptioned image of geisha seated, possibly by the Kamo River in Kyoto, entertaining a male guest. A lute is placed on the rice mat together with a tray of beer. One of the geisha is looking straight to camera, a striking composition. Another uncaptioned, in the Kyoto group, is likely to be in Arashiyama, shows a sandalled figure on a mountain path overlooking the leisure boating below. There are also images of pagoda, fishing, rice planting, street vendors and markets. More than half the photographs appear to be from the studio of the Yokohama based photographer Tamamura Kozaburo (c.1856-192?) who at his height was described as "the best photographer in Yokohama". As Terry Bennett has attested, Tamamura's business strategy of selling souvenir albums of views and costumes to foreigners became a "winning formula". (see Terry Bennett, "Early Japanese Images", Tuttle 1996, and "Photography in Japan 1853-1912", Tuttle 2006).

RARE ! . *** **** *** . . LARGE-SIZE HAND-TINTED ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH . . . SHOWING OTAGIRI NIIGATA "ZIG-ZAG" ROAD . . . MOST LIKELY AN IMAGE BY THE YOKOHAMA PHOTOGRAPHER . . . TAMAMURA KOZABURO . * This excellent image shows a broad view of the famous sight of the 'zig-zag' road in Otagiri, the pine forest in Niigata. . Being one of the famous sights in Japan, this excellent mid- 19th century example shows the road and the bridge going up the mountain. , Artistically composed, the photographer captured the essence of the uniqueness of this sight. . The photograph was mounted on the decorative-bordered board, with the English language, numbered label. . * NOTE: Identity of Photographers: It was the custom of the period for Japanese photographers to buy, sell & trade with other photographers images to enhance their own photo albums, souvenirs sold to foreign visitors to Japan. . That necessarily means the actual, original photographer of images was mostly lost to posterity. It is possible in some cases to identify negatives by their numbers [if present] or by 'artistic analysis' meaning by style of the photograph, against known examples. This is more an 'art' than a 'science' at best. Educated guesses are the norm these days. . This photograph follows the style and type of commonly photographed landscape and scenery taken by Tamamura. Also the album page border design is similar to other albums we have had by this photographer. It's an 'educated' guess as t the identity of this photographer. . *** THE PHOTOGRAPHER -TAMAMURA KOZABURO [1856-1923?]: . He worked in his Yokohama studio & provided images, albums and photographic service to both Japanese and mostly his foreign clients by 1881. His family were hereditary retainers to the Hoshinno of Rinnoji, a branch of the Imperial family whose head had served as chief priest to the main temple in Nikko since 1654 ergo his interest in taking photographs of the temples there. . His business thrived with the sudden influx of foreigners to Japan and he gained a reputation as a very skilled professional & provided large orders for glass slides and photographs to universities of Cambridge & Chicago. . He was internationally renowned and was commissioned to provide the stunning figure of 180,000 albumen hand-colored photographs of Japan for the book by F. Brinkley: JAPAN: DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED BY THE JAPANESE. [See our website for an example of this title] . His photographs are an excellent record of an earlier Japan, capturing the Japanese as they were, in native dress, the scenery and life styles of the period. . *** CONDITION: The photograph is nicely hand-colored, with a minimum of fading. The image is sharp and clear. The board has a bit of the usual edge 'toning' which is commensurate of an item of this age and period. There is a hint of a tiny bit of typical fading, nevertheless the image is strong with excellent color. The back side of the board is clean with typical bit of usual toning. . This appears to be one of a group of loose photographs contained in a portfolio of perhaps 12-24 images. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCE .
