This work outlines the decisions and discussions of the Parisian Sanhedrin. The decree issued on the 30th of May 1806 requested that a Special Assembly of Jewish leaders and Rabbis, from all of the French departments, would meet in Paris to discuss all outstanding matters, including answering questions dealing with accusations against the Jews made by the anti-Semites. It was on the 23rd of July 1806, when all of these representatives met in Paris, at which time Napoleon stated: "My desire is to make Jews equal citizens in France, have a conciliation between their religion and their responsibilities in becoming French, and to answer all the accusations made against them. I want all people living in France to be equal citizens and benefit from our laws." One hundred and eleven representatives of the Jewish community, representing all the departments of France and Northern Italy met at City Hall. Napoleon had requested answers to accusations made against the Jews so he could understand their position clearly. The reunion of so many Jews from the different parts of France represented the renewal of the famous "Sanhedrin" which, according to Jewish Talmudic tradition, ruled Israel from 170 to 106 B.C.E.

Quarter Calf. Zustand: Very Good. First Italian Edition. Milan: Destefanis, 1807. First edition. 8vo. 516, 116, 4 pp. advertising. Contemporary quarter calf. A few minor blemishes, but very good copy. This is the first Italian edition of the Transactions of the Parisian Sanhedrin; or, Acts of the Assembly of Israelitish Deputies of France and Italy. Convened at Paris by an Imperial and Royal Decree dated May 30, 1806. In 1806, the French Emperor Napoleon called a meeting of one hundred and eleven leading Jews of France, Italy and Germany in Paris. This meeting, and many subsequent other ones, followed several years of loud outcries against the French Jews by various regional factions. Made equal before the law after the French Revolution, hitherto suppressed Jews in Catholic France were attempting to advance themselves in the new Empire, but had become the object of scorn and hatred. Napoleon, who had designs on the Middle East, decided that he would use this situations to further his own political ends. The assemblage of Notables, consisting in the main of rabbis, were presente with twelve questions that dealt with national patriotism intermarriage and other issues of national and religious concern. Initially, Napoleon had intended to berate and pressure the Jewish community into accepting his fiats, but he gradually shifted towards a more accommodating attitude and the delegates managed to answer his dictums to his satisfaction. Napoleon now understood that it was certainly to his advantage to cultivate the support of the Jews of Eruope rather than castigate them and he determined that setting up a Jewish advisory body, called after ancient Jewish tradition, the Sanhedrin, could work to his own ends. This first Sanhedrin was convened in Paris in 1806. While the action of Napoleon aroused in many Jews of Germany the hope that, influenced by it, their governments also would grant them the rights of citizenship, others looked upon it as a political contrivance. Rare.
