Tear on top of the back cover of volume I and at the bottom of the spine. Three scratches on spine of volume 2 that passed to the other side. Interior with signs of wear. Volume 1 as a few pages slightly bent on the top right side. Remaining interior in good condition.; "Although bamboo is a common plant found in many parts of the world, few peoples have taken such a keen interest in its use as a medium for artistic expression as the Chinese. Their fondness for bamboo has frequently been expressed in poetry, painting, calligraphy, carving and many other art forms. Since the Sung dynasty (960-1279), the Chinese have written of bamboo as the symbol of the "true gentleman", or scholar possessing the virtues of endurance, righteousness, humility and integrity. Chinese scholars always enjoy the presence of bamboo, whether it be the growing plant, or bamboo in painting, or an object made from part of the plant. It is not difficult, therefore, to preceive why bamboo carving has its own special significance in the Chinese art scene and why this art form was so closely associated with Chinese scholars. In fact, most of the carvings in the exhibition as illustrated in this volume were once the companions of Chinese scholars in their elegant studios. This first exhibition of bamboo carving, has been made possible only through the untiring efforts and support of our Museum Adviser, Dr. Ip Yee. We are deeply in debt to him not only for the generous loan of his fine collection of bamboo carvings, but also for the expert advice to the preparation of the exhibition and compilation of this handbook." excerpt from the acknowledgments, Part I, by Laurence C.S. Tam, September, 1978.; "In this volume the attempt is made to provide some basic facts, in English and in Chinese, on Chinese bamboo carvers and their carvings gleaned from Chinese literary records, and to do so in a manner that will facilitate reference. A list of 300 bamboo carvers has been compiled, and the sources for each are indicated after each biography for the use of those who may wish to research further. In order to facilitate positive identification of artists among the spectrum of their names, and pseudonyms, and other assumed names, a special index has been compiled with direct reference to the biographical notes of each artist. Part I of this book attempted a brief summary of the history of bamboo carving, and there, it was noted that the subject has so far been little studied. Here, in order to facilitate further study and research, a compilation of available material has been made, and the resulting three lists show the known items of bamboo carving of different periods, with the source of each recorded item indicated. These lists have been made up to enable easy access to the basic information on the earliest known items of bamboo carving, together with the recorded examples by known carvers and also those so far anonymous. In the exhibition 'Chinese Bamboo Carving', there were two hundred and eleven items on display. These were all fine works selected from collections from many parts of the world. All are illustrated in Part I of this book. Many other examples of fine bamboo carving exist in local Hong Kong collections, and these are now collected in this present volume in order to provide further visual examples of forms, techniques, pictorial motifs, composition, and even dating criteria." excerpt from Preface, Part II, by Laurence C.S. Tam, Curator, Hong Kong Museum of Art.…

The exhibition features sixty-five pieces of blue and white, fifty-four pieces of polychrome and forty-four pieces of monochrome, totalling one hundred and sixty-tree objects dating from the 13th to the 18th century, they are the very best of Mr. Ko Shih Chao's acquisitions made in the last twenty years. A large majority of the pieces are products of the imperial kilns of Jingdezhen. They present a spectrum of techniques and styles, and tell the story to the constant striving by potters of Jingdezhen to refine the porcelain body, to master the intricacies of firing, and to invent new glazes from metals, a forth element provided by nature. It is an extraordinary chapter - and the climatic chapter - from the seven-thousand year saga of ceramics. Through the generosity of Mr. Ko Shih Chao the Tianminlou Collection has been put in public view. In addition to lending his collection for exhibition, Mr. Ko has also sponsored the publication of the catalogue that accompanies the exhibition. To the catalogue itself he has contributed many entries as well as one of the essays. The value of the catalogue has been enhanced by the essays contributed by Mr. John Ayers, Mr Julian Thompson and Mr Laurence Tam. It was Mr. Ko Shih Chao idea to include in the catalogue panoramic illustrations of a number of pieces so that the swept and subtlety of their designs can be fully appreciated. The catalogue is itself a visual delight thanks to the superb technique of the photographers: Mr Ogawa Tadahiro who did the panoramic photographs, Mr Wakisaka Susumu who took most of the colour transparencies for Volume I of the catalogue. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. TAM, Laurence C. S. (curator). Monochrome Ceramics of Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties. Hong Kong: Jointly presented by the Min Chiu Society and the Urban Council, Hong Kong (Hong Kong Museum of Art), 1979. Large Octavo (26.5 x 21cm). Pale green cloth boards. Original pictorial dust jacket. 142 pp. 89 colour and black-and-white plates; 240 illustrations throughout. Text primarily in Chinese, with English content. Second impression (first published 1977). Catalogue of the exhibition held at the Hong Kong Museum of Art during the 1977 Hong Kong Arts Festival. Monochrome Ceramics of Ming and Ch'ing Dynasties, produced jointly with the Min Chiu Society, documents one of the most technically demanding and aesthetically refined branches of Chinese ceramic production: the single-colour glazed wares of the Ming and Qing dynasties, in which the entire visual and technical achievement of a piece rests on the purity, depth, and consistency of a single unbroken glaze, rather than on painted or applied decoration. Monochrome wares, prized within Chinese collecting tradition for their restraint and technical perfection, range across the celebrated palette of imperial glaze colours, each requiring exacting control of kiln temperature and atmosphere to achieve. With 89 colour and black-and-white plates and 240 illustrations documenting pieces drawn substantially from private Hong Kong collections assembled through the Min Chiu Society, this catalogue remains a frequently cited reference for the study of Ming and Qing monochrome production, valued by specialists for the range and quality of material it brought together from private hands not otherwise generally accessible to researchers. Near fine in good dust jacket. Jacket torn and creased at spine head. Volume presents well, some very mild toning at text block edges.…

Orig. uniform hardcovers (moss green paper-covered boards with gilt lettering), d./j. Small 4to. - Dust jackets sl. dam. & discol. on the spines.Very rare complete 2-volume set. - This two-volume scholarly publication was written by the renowned collector Dr. Ip Yee and Laurence C.S. Tam. The publication is regarded worldwide as one of the most authoritative and comprehensive standard works on the history, techniques, and artists of Chinese bamboo carving. The work offers an in-depth study of the traditional art form in which Chinese artisans and scholars (literati) worked bamboo with great precision into utilitarian objects and works of art. The first volume was originally published in conjunction with a major exhibition during the 3rd Festival of Asian Arts in Hong Kong. It contains an extensive art-historical analysis of bamboo carving throughout the centuries. It is richly illustrated with images of masterpieces (such as richly decorated brush holders, incense holders, and figures) from the famous private collection of Dr. Ip Yee and other international museums. The second volume serves as a scholarly supplement. It includes, among other things, a biographical list of 300 historical Chinese bamboo carvers, an overview of their unique artist marks (signatures and seals), and translations of historical literary sources regarding this art form. The book is entirely bilingual, written in English and Chinese, bridging the gap between traditional Chinese expertise and the international art world.…
