In den WarenkorbWhite card mount. 9 x 7.5 inch image on x 10 x 8 inch card. Albumen photograph. "6359 State Capitol, Sacramento, Cal." in negative at lower edge. Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912) bounced between the east and west coasts as a youth. After opening his first studio in Syracuse, New York, he returned to California where he eventually established the "Taber Gallery" at No. 12 Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was quite successful with a stock of over 30,000 Western views, though many were the unacknowledged works of others. When the San Francisco earthquake led to the destruction of his vast collection, his business folded. This image is not at Berkeley nor on Calisphere, but is similar to "The Capitol, Sacramento, Cal. B 2369," (at Berkeley)except this image is taken closer to the entrance, with people in the distance at the steps, and provides a more powerful view. Very good, very faint fading, mainly to the sky.…

In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. Special Edition. One cardboard card is trimmed to the size of the mounted photograph 7 by 9 inches, minor light scattered foxing, discoloration in the foreground of one, otherwise quite nice condition. Isaiah West Taber moved into 121 Post Street in 1893, and was there until his studio was destroyed in 1906, along with all his negatives and printed - so from what I have researched these are unique images. I bought them from an estate sale down the street from the defunct St. Francis Riding Club on 7th Avenue, and suspect the photos were taken in Golden Gate Park nearby, probably in about 1900. The African American men are neatly and uniformly dressed, and probably retained by the family to care for the horses, a task commonly assigned them. Price is for all three photographs.…

In den WarenkorbPhotograph. Zustand: Very Good. Photograph [4 7/8 x 7 7/8"] on a gray mount [12 1/2 x 18 3/4"]. Tiny loss to the top fore-edge corner of the mount. Two short closed tears with a 1 1/2" crease between them to the top edge. I. W. Taber (1830-1912) opened his gallery on San Francisco's Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was well known for portraiture and and a plethora of California and Western views- quite a few of which were the unacknowledged works of other photographers. Taber enjoyed success outside of California as well. He was sent to London in 1897 to photograph the pageant of the Queen Victoria Jubilee. Tragically, Taber's career came to a halt when he lost his gallery and negative collection in 1906 due to the San Francisco earthquake and fire. (Information from Online Archive of California).…
