This presents the publisher's interview with Iranian feminist Azar Tabari during her visit to London in March 1979. Tabari was a leading member of the Womens Rights Defence Groups formed in Iran after International Women's Day. She describes how her movement was formed out of a gathering of 15,000 women at Tehran University on 8 March, the day after Ayatollah Khomeini declared the veil compulsory, and that women could work on condition they wear the chador. This had come on the back of further controls including upholding the Shah's ban on abortions, and removing birth control pills from chemists. She describes the demonstration, noting similar events among Kurdish and Azeri women. The remaining sections present a history of the movement and its demands, a critique of the Shah and Khomeini on women, Islamic women, Islam and sexuality, and a call for support.
